Hey.. I am a nurse in recovery. My state (Virginia) has just allowed me to go back to practice and I have had a long hard few months of searching for work. Does anyone have any advice? I have been clean 2 years and I really feel passionate about nursing. I have 8 years of nursing experience. I worked in acute care hospital, ER, float pool and long-term care. I am eager and excited but feeling a little discouraged as so many people have turned me down after I tell them my story.

Are you in a monitoring program? If not, I don't see any reason why you should disclose your recovery to a potential employer. (Obviously, if you are in one, you have to share that information.) You'll probably want to look outside the acute care/hospital environment and consider recovery-friendly jobs such as dialysis nursing where you don't have to administer meds. In the meantime, I've asked the moderators to move your post to the Nurses and Recovery forum where it should get more responses from others in similar situations.

Hi. I'm in Mississippi. Dialysis is very recovery friendly. I work for Fresenius kidney care. I'm not in a monitoring program yet but I've told my boss about my situation and that I'm under investigation by the board of nursing. I like dialysis more than I thought I would and the pay is very good.

I'm just wondering why the BON is taking so long . I self reported over a year ago-Feb 2016. How long did it take for your case to come up?

I live in Virginia. It only took a few months for my case to come up. Maybe 4 months. Have you called and asked the investigator ? I know you're anxious and ready to know and put that behind you. Sorry it's taking so long.

Thank u. I've called the investigator several times and he says "we're working on it" hopefully I will hear something soon. I'm glad I'm working , and attending AA meetings , been sober 14 months , so thankful!

Have you considered getting additional certifications such as case management? I know my BON has a list of certifications they recognize such as CCRN or ABMCN. It's not a college coorifice or anything but you have to pass an exam. I think it would be beneficial in padding a resume.
