Can RNs w/ restrictions work at Flu shot clinics?

Nurses Recovery

Published

Hi everyone! I've posted my story before, but as a recap: I had an addiction to narcotics, was terminated for diversion, but have now been clean for almost 7 months. I am in the alternative to discipline program in my state. I'm VERY grateful to my recovery...yes going through this is extremely hard, but I am so much happier (as opposed to when I was in my active addiction) and am trying to stay positive. The job search has been hard. My restrictions are the usual: no access to narcotics during my contract, no home health care, no travel agencies....etc. But there is an opportunity for me to work for a seasonal flu shot clinic. It would only be temporary. ..it consists of going to local companies & administering flu shots to their employees. I will certainly ask my case manager about this, but does anyone have experience with this? I would like to think that it would be ok, but any insight others have would be very much appreciated. :)

run it by your case mgr.

my stipulations required me to work under another nurse supervision

Specializes in ER, TRAUMA, MED-SURG.

In Louisiana we wouldn't be able to do it.

I know under my restrictions there has to be another nurse or doctor on site with me at all times, so I cannot work in a flu shot clinic. Check with your case manager.

When I did flu shot clinics, sometimes I worked alone, and sometimes one or two other nurses worked with me. If you must have another nurse present, I would suppose you could work those clinics that are scheduled for more than one nurse.

NO you have to have direct supervision

Specializes in LTC, Psych, Med/Surg.

It depends on what your contract says.

After I had completed multiple years (can't remember how many) of my sentence (er...probation), I did flu shots at clinics at many different workplaces with my compliance monitor's blessing. I only needed indirect supervision by that time, per my contract.

The central office RN coordinating the flu clinics completed the report to the BON when my job with them was over.
