LVN 30 unit option/ Concurrency issue

I just graduated bsn in the philippines this april 2014. Im already an LVN before i even went back to the phil to study bsn. When i got back last May here in california, i renew my lvn license. I know that california is tougher now because of concurrency issue, i just started applying for the board but still waiting for my tor and diploma coz it takes awhile for my school in philippines to process and release our diplomas. For sure the board will keep asking for more requirements and still end up getting denied in the end just like everybody. My question is, what if i take the LVn 30 unit option (LVN-RN) and finish it and eventually take the nclex and pass it, will they consider my BSN schooling in the philippines or will i just be an RN without an associate degree that can only work in california? I mean i graduated BSN, or will it be a special license because its a 30unit option?

Since you're already a California LVN, you do have that "30 unit option" to become an RN. While you may be on to a good method of getting your RN in California, you run a significant risk of having your license be designated (somehow) as a non-ADN 30 unit option nurse that didn't actually graduate from a program. You will have simply met licensing requirements, if that makes any sense. Then hopefully the BRN will recognize that you have a BSN awarded, and note that your have that degree.

Here's the thing: you could end up with a BSN but a somewhat restricted license and worse job opportunities because you didn't get a degree (ADN) through your LVN to RN 30-unit option program.

I would suggest that you go through an LVN to RN program that actually results in a degree being awarded. The program that I attended for the past few years has exactly that kind of program. When you tally up the entire units, it is effectively a 30 – unit option program but it gives prior credit for learning and also has identical prerequisite requirements for entry, just like the regular ADN students do. Because of that, they are able to award the graduate the ADN degree so the LVN to RN graduates from this program have exactly the same degree, license, job opportunities, etc. that I do, as a traditional student.

The worst-case scenario is that you do this, and up with an ADN degree, get licensed as an RN, and the BRN does not recognize your BSN from the Philippines. If that's the case, then you simply take an RN – BSN course and you will be done with it.

im gona see a counselor on wednesday and take it from there. the problem with the associates program is the pre requisites, i dont know if they will credit my classes from philippines

You have a better chance of getting in an LVN to RN program than finding a program that will allow you to take med surge and OB. Those classes being offered is really not a option as no nursing program that I know of in California will offer those. You need to apply to their nursing program by fulfilling the prerequisites and compete with a million other students for the limited seats. The LV to RN program however has pretty much the same requirements for the prereqs, so the issue here is if the school will give you credit for your classes. I think the big thing is the anatomy & physiology classes. Most LVN program have a combo anatomy/physio class whereas nursing programs in California I believe will not accept the combo class unless the combo class have the same number of hours as a separate anat & physio class would have.

BTW dont worry to much about your BSN designation. Even if you get an ADN you can tell your employer you have a BSN from another country. They will either accept it or not. But realistically, now a days, employers prefer the US BSN over a foreign one.

I wouldn't worry about the BSN designation....you already have that. Employers know ALL ABOUT the concurrency issues and will think you are conscientious to go to another RN program just to be an RN.....Go for it!

Any update on this?? I’m also a BSN graduate from Philippines and I’m considering doing the LVN 30 units option since the schools I contacted told me that since I am an IEN i won’t qualify for the traditional LVN-RN bridge that results to a degree.

Graduated BSN Philippines , also planning to do the LvN To RN 30 unit option, hopefully the BSN gets recognized, done matter though cuz most jobs is all about who you know. My aunt just has her ADN and works in Kaiser so yeeee

Are you from LA? LA County allied school of health told me I can enroll to the 30 unit option with no pre-reqs needed.
