Help: Questions About Taking the NY NCLEX as a Foreign Nurse

Hi!

I am a foreign nursing graduate who is interested in taking the NCLEX in NY state. I have passed the licensure exam in my country (Philppines) and am an RN there. I read that I need to take the CGFNS and TOEFL before I can take the NY NCLEX. My dilemma is that my local license is actually expired and I currently have no means to renew it while I am here in the US. I have proof of passing the licensure exam at my country though. I have the document from the local Professional Regulations Commission. Is there a way to proceed with my CGFNS application without my local license number?

First there is no NY NCLEX, NCLEX is a national exam. You are seeking to be licensed as a registered nurse by examination in the state of NY. Passing the NCLEX is but one step in the process.

You need to review the requirements for licensing as an internationally educated registered nurse by examination. You are required to complete a CVS evaluation from CGFNS. The requirements for licensing by examination as an IEN are outlined on the NY BoN website. You do not apply for licensing by examination until your cvs is completed by CGFNS (it takes approximately 6-9 months for all documents to be received (directly from the agencies not the candidate) and submitted to the state of NY. )

You can review the cvs requirements also on the CGFNS website. Once your cvs evaluation is completed by CGFNS then you submit your application for licensing by examination to the NY BoN. Once assessed by NY BoN, you then register with Pearson Vue to await your authorization to test (ATT) to be issued. Once you have an ATT you have 90 days to schedule and take the NCLEX-RN exam.

Hi, thank you for your response. I understand the process and I understand that NCLEX applies to all states but I wanted to be specific on which state I wanted to apply in since every state's requirements differ. My question really pertains to the first step (getting the CGFNS exam before I can qualify to take the NCLEX- wherever it may be) - Is there a way around providing the local license (i.e. my proof of passing the local boards versus the actual license - which is expired).

NY does not require the CGFNS exam, only a few states do. If a current license from the country of education is required, then an expired license or simply passing the board exam is not sufficient. You do not provide that documentation to CGFNS as part of the cvs process, the verification/documentation must be submitted directly from PRC.

I looked at the CVS application it only asks if you have been licensed and whether the license is current/active. Since you do not have an active license you would select previously licensed. I do not think NY requires a current license from country of education like other states do.

I see 2 verification processes on the CGFNS site: Professional and Academic, the NY BON website does not specify which one I need to get done or if I should have both done. Would you know the specifics about this?

I may have navigated into the wrong page when I was attempting to apply. Thank you for clarifying. I will make sure to double check next time. :laugh:

I advise you to browse the NYSED Nursing Professions website for a start. You need to be certified with Child Abuse Identification and Reporting for Nurses and also Infection Control Training (HIV and Hepatitis) and you can find accredited providers to these online modules on their website.

With regards to your local license, there's no need to disclose that you are locally licensed as there are no section that asks such on their RN application form. You don't need to take the CGFNS or the TOEFL to be eligible for the NCLEX RN. Whatever documents you have in hand won't be honored if you will submit it.

Also, start CVS first before submitting your application to NYSED.

Regarding TOEFL, it actually asks for a TOEFL score for foreign nurses? Well I have one anyway just in case.

I am working on my CVS now that I have a better picture on what I need to do.

I'm pretty sure New York doesn't require TOEFL or IELTS.

Do i need to wait for the evaluation of cvs first before submitting an application for nclex rn in NY? Will they notify me?
