Filipino RN to US RN preparation

World Registration

Published

Hi! I am new here at allnurses.com. I'm a Filipino RN with 4years experience in the ER. I am just waiting for my husband's petition to get approved so we can migrate in California. My husband is a US citizen. Any career advice for me coz I really don't know where to begin. I just know that I need to take NCLEX first and I'm starting to do some self review. Do I also have to take English tests like CGFNS? What are the requirements that I need to prepare coz I wanna maximize my time while I'm waiting for our paperworks to get approved. I would really appreciate if you can give me some advice. Thanks and God bless you all!

Which state do you plan on living and working in? Each state has their own requirements and some will require English exam. Most require some form of report from an approved company on a breakdown on your transcripts like CES from CGFNS

Thank you for responding, I really appreciate it. My husband is from San Diego CA.

Here is the website for CA BRN: Board of Registered Nursing - Licensure by Examination

You would be applying by Licensure by Examination. The packet in that website has all the information needed.

When in doubt, call the Boards.

Good luck!

You don't need to take the CGFNS. Just register for the CA NCLEX boards.

You can't " just register for the boards". You are applying for a nursing license for that state. You have to meet their requirements before they will give permission to write the NCLEX.

To the OP: just so you know, any and all fees submitted to the CA BON (or any other State) is non-refundable, whether your application is accepted or denied. With that being said, please read the many many threads of a vast majority of PH grads and nurses (especially if one obtained their BSN's between the 2004 and to present) of unable to get the ATT to take the NCLEX-RN in CA, there are about two hand's worth count of those that did get lucky out of a possible few thousands applying. This is if you have to stay in CA versus going to another State, not enforcing the concurrency rules or hope that you have taken the proper courses and have sufficient hours in all classes.

Be prepared to have a back-up plan to get your transcripts submitted to getting a ATT to take the LVN exam instead. Then, get a LVN job and try to get into a LVN-RN bridge program in CA. Plan a couple of years to make that happen.

Hello! I was wondering if US hospitals take previous (Philippine) hospital experience into consideration when hiring? Are you in the US now?

Hi. Yes I am in the US now. I ended up taking LVN exam first due to concurrency issues. Sorry for the super late response...
