CARNA registration advice please

World Registration

Published

Hi. I am a nurse from England wanting to nurse in Canada.

In March I applied for registration in BC and Alberta as I didn't know which to choose. I have been granted temp registration in BC, but I've just received a letter denying me registration in Alberta. (I am an old project 2000 nurse, registered 'children's nurse'.).

The problem is after a recci/holiday my partner and I fell in love with Calgary and decided it was the place for us. Is their any point in requesting a review? (They charge $250 up-front). Is it true they will be relaxing the registration requirments for international nurses in the future?

My heart feels broken, :crying2: . Any advice is appreciated.

I'm happy for you. CARNA required me to take the SEC assessment. So, I applied for a tourist visa. However, I was denied by the canadian embassy.:-( How then would I be able to take the SEC? too bad for me...

I think I went into the rockiest road but to no avail!

Have a chat with the nursing college and see if there are any other places you can take SEC, I have seen some report on being able to take in London and this is very new

The CARNA website has been updated in the last week or so, and their information says the SEC is available in Calgary and Edmonton. In fact, it has only been available in Edmonton for about three months, so I strongly doubt they would have located an acceptable site, made all the necessary arrangements and started an SEC programme in the UK. It would be cost-prohibitive for one thing and the UK is not the largest exporter of nurses to Alberta at the moment so it wouldn't be sensible.

Is a student visa a wise decision than having a tourist visa? What I'm planning is enroll in a school with a different program like Pharmacy technician, then once the SEC arrives or they require me to get a bridging program I will just shift course. But the problem is it's very expensive yearly tuition is around $8k CAD yearly. what do you think, is it worth the risk?

Hey all

I thought this temporary permit from CARNA, would make it that little bit easier to practice while you got your full registration...but I don't think that is so....I'm only childrens quaified and currently in limbo, sent my form off back in feb but not hopefull! WE are trying to way up what to do, do we go just for the better lifestyle and way of life and I change career and go back to my roots of being a secretary, or do we pay for me to re train but can we aford to do this...or do we sty in England...it's just so so hard! x x

A couple of things pop to mind.

School fees are higher for those on student visas. You'd probably have to double the fees.

I don't think going the secretarial route is a wise choice. Find out what you need to do to upgrade your nursing skills. There is no shortage of administrative staff as local schools produce people all the time.

Thanks for that, once I have my info back from CARNA, that will be my next step! If I haven't heard from them by the time we come for oyr holiday in may I may go and visit them in person! ha ha x x

Hi I sent all my documents in CARNA already, On my Log-in Profile, Application Assessment was received on March 10 but all other information are blank including the verification of registration, Nursing practice hours etc..

But at the courier's website all of them where already received by CARNA on March 11. However, there is no record that the file was received by CARNA on my profile. I contacted them and they said it could take up to 2 weeks upon received of documents to update the website. 2 weeks had past and there is still none.

How long did it updated when you have submitted your requirements? Should I contact them again?

AT the SEC proof of competence - do we need to submit seminars attended or employment certiticate? or registrar's judgement can be made by only submitting transcript and verification of registration?

THANKS!

Hey I have also logged in and a few things are missing, they have asked for my nursing hours breakdown again, which I am sure was in the envelope but hey!

I remember someone saying it was taking about 6 months to get a decision and I have been told they are very busy!

Mine shows most of the things back, as I had a letter from the NMC saying they had been sent.

I have just sent what was aked on the IEN booklet, they will contact you if there is anything missing, I should think!

Keep in touch on how you get on!
