CA nurse wants to work in Guam

World Registration

I'm an OB nurse from California with 2 years experience. What are the requirements to work in Guam? Are there short-term contracts (6 months-1 year)? I'm in the Philippines right now (it has been 9 months). My CA RN license and CPR certification are current. I wonder if the process to travel to Guam can be done online because going back to California is questionable? Thanks for any helpful information.

Check with Worldwide, they staff Guam. There is no reason to visit California for getting a Guam license. I'm curious, if you never visit the U.S., how to do renew your certifications like BLS, ACLS, and NRP? Are they offered in the Philippines?

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

Hi NedRN,

Thank you very much for the information. This is the first time I am looking at working as a travel nurse. I have only been living in the Philippines for nine months that's why I still have my certifications. Thanks again.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Travel nurses are experienced nurses especially in specialty areas. They are expected to work independently with minimal orientation and no additional training required Have you actually worked as a registered nurse in the US or the Philippines ? It doesn't sound like it from your post. Specialty travel nurses generally have 2-5 years experience working in a US hospital specialty unit

At some point you will have to renew your certifications. I believe assignments in Guam are one year. Some hospitals require everything to stay current until the end of the assignment but either way expiration dates may get in your way. I'm going to guess that they are renewable in the Philippines, I think they even do the NCLEX there. Are you Philippines schooled?

Hi JustBeachyNurse,

Thanks for the info you provided. I worked in California nurse as a postpartum and nursery nurse for two years. Are traveling nurses usually have to work in hospitals?

Most commonly travel nurses work in hospitals and require recent, relevant hospital experience and current certifications (ACLS, ERPC, TNCC, PALS, NRP, BLS, RN-BC, etc as applicable).

In my area only hospitals contract travel nurses, long term care does not have the budget or resources to contract travel nurses.

I'd have to take a look if I can renew my certifications in the Philippines. I received my nursing degree in California.

Ok. Good to know. I've only worked in a hospital setting. I'm afraid no one would hire me if I wait too long to work again. I believe most hospitals require that the applicant work recently within a year. Is that correct?
