I am taking my certification test in less than a month and was wondering what to expect (workload wise) once I enter the NP job market. Thanks

What state/city?

In what setting do you practice?

How many patient in how many hours do you see daily?

Specializes in ICU, CV-Thoracic Sx, Internal Medicine.

1. Texas

2. Hospital inpatient setting

3. 2-4/hr depending on complexity

4. Hours are start to finish.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

1. IL

2. Dialysis units

3. I see 210 pts per week so I must see 42 per day. However in reality pts that are ill or more complex I might see more than once per week. It averages 60 per day and they are anywhere from 10-25miles from my house.

4. I average 55-60 hrs per week

Have been doing this schedule for > 3 yrs. however with new recently hired APN I will get some relief.

Wow thats a lot of patients daily! And you have to drive to them!

Specializes in FNP, ONP.

1. I will not say for issues of privacy

2. Family Medicine Clinic

3. Variable. 3-5 an hour, it depends what they are there for. A CPE or medicare wellness visit is a 20 minute appt; a follow up or acute visit is 10 minutes, but over 65 years old gets 15. I block 10 minutes of every hour for catch up/food/bathroom break.

4. I make my own hours; so long as I meet my commitment, no one care what hours I work. I recently went down to a .7 FTE. This requires 24 patient contact hours a week, the rest is admin time. I am trying out a new scheme of working 8:00-3:30 Monday-Thursday, off Friday. The first 30 minutes of every day is part of my admin time, and I opt to spend it driving my kids to school, lol, so I don't actually get to work until 8:30. Since I block 10 minutes of every hour, and need 6 patient contact hours a day for those 4 days, I've been working through lunch and eating at my desk between patients. This has had me out the door, everything complete, everyday before 4. I ride my bike to work, so I prefer to avoid heavy traffic. Most importantly, I have not missed a play performance, band recital, little league or football game yet this year! Seems to be working out so far, although I miss my lunch time walks/bike rides, and my MA is not a fan. :-/ Kids come first, and they don't like it when we miss their shenanigans.

Specializes in Adult Internal Medicine.

1. Suburban MA

2. Adult Internal Medicine

3a. Three days a week I see an average of 3-4 patients per hour, eight hour day with hour lunch, for a total of about 24 per eight hour day. I take 10mins/he for admin.

3b. Two days a week I cover up to 6 patients inpatient in the morning plus another 12-14 in clinic for a eight hour day. Sometimes 10 hours with admissions and discharges late in the day.

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

1. MA

2. Outpatient specialty practice-4 different office locations

3. Depends on the office. In the busiest office I see 20-30 patients in a 10 hour day (with an hour for lunch). Less in the satellite offices.

4. I work 2 ten hour days and 2 8 hour days. I have every Friday off. I'm on call 1 week out of 4 (phone only).

You drive your kids to school on your bicycle? That's tough.

Wow...55-60 hrs per week! Are you paid hourly or do you get an amazing productivity bonus? Cause if you are salary you are getting the wrong end of the stick on this one!

LOL - I am salaried but am compensated very well for my area. And...one of the reasons no one leaves this practice is that they FULLY pay for medical insurance and the absolute top reason everyone stays is that we have 100% employer paid retirement plan!

I really truly don't mind the driving except in the winter.
