Nurse Corps Loan Repayment 2014!

Specialties NP

Published

Hi everyone,

I am an NP working at a NY facility with a score of 19, which is tier 1. My loans each month are CRAZY (about $1500), so even though my debt:income score isn't as high as some (it's about 120%), this would be life changing for me!

I was just hoping to get some general advice/thoughts from everyone during this very painful waiting process. I've heard that if you do get the award you generally find out in July/August, otherwise rejections mainly come around October.

Has anyone else been in my shoes, with a similar facility score and debt/income score, with any words of wisdom? I'm nervous and thought it would just be nice to chat with other people who are going through the same thing, or who have been through it!

Lastly, for the folks who have gotten this before, what ways do you utilize it? Do you use it to make your minimum monthly payments and try to save, or do you make 1.5 x your regular payments? Pay off private loans first?

Just thought it would be nice to get a convo going this application cycle!

Sarah :)

Malibuems and phosphorus, your comments or a little disheartening. But they're also very confusing. Malibu,if what you're saying is correct then they clearly do not award the money in the way that is delineated in the guide. It says very clearly that they take everyone in the same tier, line them up from highest debt:income ratio to lowest, and start awarding money from the top. That being the case, you should've been awarded before several of the people who said they were awarded in this thread. It doesn't make any sense to me. Have you followed up any further?

Phosphorus, there is a link to a page where you can look up your facility score in the program guide. You should've come across this during the application process. I'm not quite sure what you said in your post about changing jobs, but I'm hoping that's the reason you got denied. Otherwise, it sounds like you are also not placed in the award que properly.

For those of you who are in the program; I realize that 100% of the money you receive has to be applied to the pertinent loans, but is there a time limit as to when that money has to be paid? In other words, are you required to pay over your minimum payment, or can you only make your minimum payment and use the leftover money towards your minimum payments after you've completed your 2 to 3 years of service? I know people are going to say "why would you want to do that?" It's just part of an idea I'm thinking through.

Unfortunately I was not denied for switching jobs since they never got to the stage where that would have been an issue. Instead they simply said there wasn't enough funds to make my case a priority. Remember that part of the deal brokered for the financial shut down was to cut HRSA funds....

Regardless of the funding available, there are people with a lower debt:income ratio posting here that they were awarded. If you were in fact in a teir 1 facility, then either something is seriously broken at HRSA, or there was some other issue with your eligibility. If it's the former, then that is very concerning.

Of course as you said, you don't know what your facility's score was, so another possiblity was that you were not teir 1.

Hoping someone can help me with this question. I work at multiple HRSA sites, all with the same HPSA score and all with the same company. Does not working at only one site disqualify me from nurse corps loan repayment?

The US Public Health Service has another loan-repayment option if you have site flexibility (and are under 44): U.S. Public Health Service Home

Anyone apply for this year and heard anything yet? I am at a small critical access hospital w a score of 11. Not very hopeful, but praying.

Nope, haven't heard anything yet. Still "Under Review". I'm at a community health center with a score of 19 and I have a debt-to-income ratio of 177%

Im still under review also. My score is 19 and ratio 86%. I remember reading a thread where nps were notified first and normally started hearing something end of may/early june. Hopefully we hear something soon

Do you have the email address they use to contact you? I'm keeping an eye out for any correspondence from them, but would feel alot better if I could lock in their email address and know it would never go to the spam folder.

Thanks in advance

Did you ever find this answer out? I'm in the same situation.

If you log into the portal where you applied, you'll see the email they have on file for you in the upper right corner. Hope this helps!
