Nurse Corps Loan Repayment 2014!

Specialties NP

Published

Hi everyone,

I am an NP working at a NY facility with a score of 19, which is tier 1. My loans each month are CRAZY (about $1500), so even though my debt:income score isn't as high as some (it's about 120%), this would be life changing for me!

I was just hoping to get some general advice/thoughts from everyone during this very painful waiting process. I've heard that if you do get the award you generally find out in July/August, otherwise rejections mainly come around October.

Has anyone else been in my shoes, with a similar facility score and debt/income score, with any words of wisdom? I'm nervous and thought it would just be nice to chat with other people who are going through the same thing, or who have been through it!

Lastly, for the folks who have gotten this before, what ways do you utilize it? Do you use it to make your minimum monthly payments and try to save, or do you make 1.5 x your regular payments? Pay off private loans first?

Just thought it would be nice to get a convo going this application cycle!

Sarah :)

Hey everyone! I am a MSN, CNL working as an inpatient RN on a med-tele unit. My application is still under "final review," I signed my contract on 8/1. I looked at previous posts and it looks like others received their counter signature within 30 days. I was hoping to hear by the end of August, but sadly that did not happen. Each day I don't hear anything about my application I get a little bit more discouraged. Just wanted to post about my struggles, anyone else out their sign their contract 8/1 and hear back yet? Also has anyone been under final review and not received the award?

I signed my contact on 8/4 and have yet to hear back! I am wondering the same thing about being in final review and then not receiving the award. Starting to get paranoid!!

I received my Welcome Packet on Friday!! Does anyone know once we receive the Welcome Packet when we start getting the stipends? I noticed that it said if you do not receive anything by the end of the month after receiving the award to call, but it didn't say when we actually get the first one. I usually make all my student loan payments at the beginning of the month, so I was hoping to not have to make Octobers!

Since you received your welcome packet in Sept, you should expect to receive your first payment by the end of the month in Oct. I received my welcome package in August and I am expecting my first deposit at the end of this month.

Hey guys, I just graduated nursing school with a bsn and I just got a job at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell as a PICU nurse. I'm alittle confused, so there are two loan forgiveness programs for RNs? I put my hospitals address on the HRSA shortage site locator and it said my site was not a critically shortage facility. Does that mean I don't qualify for this program, or one program and not the other. Also how do I figure out what tier my facility is and my debt:income ration? I had to take federal and private loans to fund my schooling and my repayment starts in a couple of weeks. Any help would be much appreciated.

@mrsinghnyc Cornell is not eligible for this program because of where it is located. I work at NYP Columbia (which is eligible, along with Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital). If your loans are very high, you might want to try to do an internal transfer over to CU or CHONY.

I hope you got the loan repayment. I'm a CRNA at a similar facility with a score of 19. I owe more than most med students including monthly payments of +$3000. I did not receive the loan repayment. I called to ask why and was told that they ran out of money. I saw other people post their debt to income ratio that was much lower than mine and they received the loan forgiveness. So apparently the debt to income ratio means nothing to these people. Very frustrating! Good luck!

Hello all. I am finishing an RN-BSN program and want to start an NP after that. I am just starting to learn about these repayment programs and have a question. I was able to find a list of facilities on the hrsa web site but I couldn't find a single hospital in the two states I searched (va and wa). If I want to take advantage of a program like this do I need to work in a community health clinic or similar setting? Is there somewhere else I should be searching to find eligible hospitals?

I must live in the dark ages, can someone explain this to me? I am starting np school in January and just finished filling out my fafsa.

Specializes in General.

Try calling HRSA they may be able to help

Exactly what percentage of federal tax is taken out of the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program? I also read it is subject to state and local taxes too? For those who have received it, please explain the ins and outs of taxes. Thanks!

I was denied saying "Our resources could not fund everyone who applied. Regretfully, your application was not selected to receive an award". I worked at the VA as an RN in Miami-dade, don't know the score (how do you find that), but I know Dade county in general is basically full of critical shortage areas, and my debt-to-income was probably nearly 180%. I switched jobs in the middle to an NP at hospice so would have been able to apply for the HRSA program for providers, but was also told if you switch midstream for nurse corps you become disqualified. Either way it took till late September to hear back which is ridiculous. In otherwords you have to stay put Jan-Oct more or less with no guarantees. Just a heads up for hopefuls.
