Applying for DEA with temporary FNP

Specialties NP

Published

I am a new grad waiting to test next week. Can I apply for my DEA before testing, with just a temporary certification in AZ, or do I have to wait until I have the real deal?

The motivation is to get the ball rolling so I can start my new job.

Thanks.

You will have to check with your state board. I'm in Missouri and I had to have 1000 hours of working and prescribing meds before I could apply.

From what I understand, you do have to be certified w/ ANCC or AANP first. I don't know of any states that will allow you to have a DEA number before you get your license. I have a AZ license, but my original license is in TX. They required me to have a AZ license before I can prescribe.

The DEA application is through the federal system, which they then kick down to your local DEA branch for issuance due to extra state rules on top of the federal rules. As far as I know, in order to apply online for the DEA license, you are required to have your state APRN license number and national certification information. Some states also require you to get their on controlled substance registration number before the DEA will issue you a license. When I first got my DEA license in Texas, I had to get my state issued Controlled Substance Registration number (since been removed as a requirement) before the DEA would hook me up.

Either way, I can't imagine the DEA giving out a license before you are a provider yourself.

You need a state license number to apply. You may also need a state CS number as well.
