Unfriendly Nurses.....

Nurses Relations

Published

I suppose I want to vent, or maybe make a statement. I am generally a laid back person, at work and at home. I realize that everyone has their own personality, however I wanted to bring this up and see what everyone has to say about it.

My entire nursing career, I have tried to be friendly to new hires and nursing students. After all we were in the same position once too!

Since my husband and I have been travel nursing I have noticed "unfriendly nurses".

I don't know if they just don't like new people in general or if it's because we are travelers. I even had one nurse introduce me to someone I was going to report to as "the traveler". I had to reply that I had a name and expected them to use it.

What is it? Are they afraid we want their jobs? Hey, I'm having a great time traveling and will be gone in 12 weeks......no threat here.

Is it that they don't think we have experience? Hey, I have forgotten more than most of these young guns have learned. Besides, as a travel nurse the hosptials expect you to hit the ground running with very little orientation.

Anyone have a take on this?:typing

I'm an outgoing and friendly person, and honestly I miss my friends at home. Would like to make new friends all over this great USA.....

So, thanks for listening and welcome any and all comments......

I don't know the answer. I'd be friendly to you though!

I don't understand people who are unfriendly to begin with. I usually get along with most everyone, (except those who are just plain unpleasant and rude) and when people are friendly with those around them it makes going to work SO much better. I really don't understand why people go out of their way to be crappy to others, it really makes the work environment worse.

Specializes in psych. rehab nursing, float pool.

friendly means behaving in a kind way to someone, as a friend would behave.( as taken from wikipedia)

Specializes in Cardiac Telemetry, ED.

Well, if you ever come to my unit, I'll be friendly to you.

Specializes in LTC, Med/Surg, Peds, ICU, Tele.

I wanted to give a different perspective here. I do try to make an effort to include newcomers, by the way...

There is a type of person who is 'over the top' friendly. They seem to want to have instant intimacy with people they've just met. They ask alot probing, personal questions in order to get to know you as quickly as possible. Or, they share things about themselves of a personal nature, such as the fact that their ex-husband was a skirt chasing cad who dumped them for a dumb blond, their daughter just got knocked up by a drug addict, they think the Mormon Church is a cult, they think George Bush should be impeached, etc and so forth.

This type of person causes me to shut down to them. I'll totally avoid any type of conversation other than work related, and I'll have to make a big effort to do that. I don't like people I don't know to grill me about my personal life, and I don't like acting as a pseudo-therapist for anyone but a close friend. Just food for thought... :twocents:

I totally agree with the "overly friendly". I tend to shut down when I hear all kind of intimate info from someone I just met. It's none of anyone's business about my personel life, such as marriage, problems, etc.... I do enjoy hearing about family and friends. Experiences they have had.

To be honest, since we are getting ready to leave here, almost everyone wants to know why we arent' staying. LOL, my reply is that "we", Gary and I" can't deal with the cold. Which is true. Hey we are from South Georgia and if it gets below 50, we freeze.

Once again, thanks for everyone's insight. Makes me think about how the permanent staff feel.

You should carry a water gun and spray the people anytime they misbehave. It works with cats and birds.

Specializes in trauma, ortho, burns, plastic surgery.

Diana, nurses like all other people are friendly, unfriendly and professional friendly, loool. Now by our nature, humans, we try to search friendly environment. Is better for you to not expect a FRIENDLY one, but a professional friendly one for sure. You could not change no ones so you will frustate yourself making assumptions about nurses friendship. Just work my dear... real friends are outside of your work, even if this could be for you a hurting thruth. Have a nice professional friendly work day. Hugs!

way to go Bortaz!!!!!!!!! :rotfl: :hpygrp: :yeah::roll :lol2:
