What would you do? Nursing student working who works same floor. This is her last semister nursing school. She has hx of meth and other meds, hx of stealing from co-workers & patients. She has returned back to work due to holiday break. Her face has multiple lesions, she scratches everywhere, she acts like a "crackhead". What would you do>?????

Specializes in Public Health, L&D, NICU.

If you truly believe something is going on, you should objectively report what you have seen and heard to your manager. Not opinions, hearsay, or suspicions. We worked with a nurse who everyone suspected was doing drugs. What finally confirmed it was some truly flaky behavior, and a patient complaining that she literally fell asleep while checking the patient's cervix.

Ok, let me explain.. Angry in a way yes, because she is taking from helpless patients that have a little bit. As far as reporting to nurse manager and policemen, yes they were notified however "she has to be caught in the actual act." from a supervisor or a patient has to complain about it. Most of the patients have dementia and the ones that are with it do not want to be a "trouble" patient. My co-workers are all aware of her "doing" but she needs to be caught in the act. Her behavior is a nervous, scratching her face picking at her skin etc.

Is it right to act like see no evil, hear no evil , say no evil. This is sad. Angry for my patients that get robbed ..maybe I should not care about them so much .

That is awful! Poor patient! I would not want a thief, drug addict nursing student or nurse looking or touching me. Shame

Again, be very, very careful that this is not just some gossip gone wild. And some people have some nervous habits that are skin picking and scratching. And if no one has "caught her in the act" then no one can be sure anything is going on. Does she provide good care? Do some of the patients like her? Just don't get caught up in the "she is the devil in disguise" line of thinking.

Not sure if she was tested at work. She is very sneaky and would not surprise me if she found a way to get around this. I just think it is just wrong!

You think what is wrong? You have no proof of anything. You need to mind your own business.

Specializes in Emergency, Telemetry, Transplant.

What does picking at her face have to do with anything? Other than being non-hygenic, it does not, it any way, prove that she is doing drugs.

As for being caught in the "actual act"...even though it is not in the Constitution (although, strangely, many people think it is), a general tenant in the country is 'innocent until proven guilty.' Circumstantial evidence does not do it. She is assumed to be innocent until their is definite proof that she is committing a crime. Is she stealing? I hope not, but maybe. Until it is proven, however, you cannot treat her like a criminal. I admire you for your commitment to your patients, but you must learn not to make snap judgements about those with whom you work.

Unless she has been caught in the act, there is no proof to what you're saying. I have a nervous habit of biting my lower lip. Would you report me? My beloved grandmother had a nervous habit of picking at her arms. Bring on the torches and pitchforks!

Focus on your own studies and patient care, not what others may/may not be doing.

Specializes in OB/GYN/Neonatal/Office/Geriatric.

You have not offered up anything to make me believe this person deserves to be called "crackhead". Who reported it to the police? There has been no proof of any wrongdoing from what little info you have given. The gossip should stop.
