Hi!i am a color blind nurse and i want to know what areas or hospital department would i fit or be safe from my deficiency.I am currently training in a hospital and I would like to extend training on special areas like OR,Renal Unit, ER, etc. The hospital wants us to choose three special areas we are most interested with, and the hospital would pick one out of those three where we should train. I would love to work in any department except the Delivery room. But of course, I would like to take into consideration my deficiency in distinguishing colors. Some say operating room is good for me because it would require less color identification. I want to know how true it is and what are the other areas best for me(since we must choose three).I really need it badly because in a month or two, the training for special area will start. Your reply, comments etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so so much!

It seems with all the computerized documentation, most of which is color highlighted, there would be difficulty in any department. I have never been an OR nurse, so cannot give any advice there. I know on tele, ICU, CCU, Cardiac Cath, there are color in the computer programs. Sorry, not much help here!!!

anything where you would have to read test results in color - like hemocult slides etc, pregnancy tests etc, so I would think the ER would be out. As for the color charting, at least in EPIC the only thing that is specially color coded is when we "yellow bar" a chart for a MRSA or VRE patient.

I have a funny feeling that this nurse is not in the USA, there is a good chance that they are not using electronic records. Speak to the people running your course and see what they suggest. How bad is your colour blindness?

What color differentiation are you blind to?

Every hospital I have ever worked in gave me a color-blindness test. I thought this was standard, but maybe not; also in each hospital only the lab personnel could "read" a hemoccult because of this very reason~ someone might see color differently.

actually i can see colors but i cant tell what kind of color are those.
