UNC Chapel Hill (Spring 2010) January 2010 - Anyone Receive Word?

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Just checking, I posted a response in a separate thread, but thought a new thread could hold its own.

I applied to UNC Chapel Hill's Nursing Program for January 2010. BSN Program, not ABSN. Already, I have received two confirmations from students that have received acceptance yesterday into the ABSN program.

1. Has anyone received word about their acceptance into either the ABSN or BSN program?

2. Has anyone received word regarding "no offer" of acceptance? And, if so, what are your plans going forward if you did not receive an offer.

I am obviously anxious and waiting for a response. Just checking to see if anyone else is in the same boat.

Thanks and good luck, everyone! :)

Hey Renee,

I'm sorry to hear that deference wasn't an option under your circumstances! That is good that they gave you a little more time to think things over. I agree with momofthreeboys...I am a person who if I'm not busy with something that also means something to me, it becomes harder to deal with stressful incidents.

It also sounds like you are a perfect candidate for UNC, especially if a nursing school rep told you that. But I completely understand the frustration of not having a guaranteed spot and having to go through that waiting process all over again, being considered on equal ground with other candidates.

I'm sure advice from strangers is difficult to take, but I'm with momofthreeboys - if school would be a good thing for you in your life right now to help you cope with this new family circumstance, then I think you should go for it with a gusto and not feel guilty or anything about it (not sure if that was a concern!). But if you think it will be added stress - and the program is very intense - then perhaps waiting would be best.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with your decision, and for you and your dad and the rest of you family right now!

[color=silver]she told me that good news was that i can reapply for may, and i am an excellent candidate for this program, and my application is exceptional... but they could not guarantee me a spot for may... and i don't know if i should take the chance... so any advice from anyone?? i mean since my dad was diagnosed, he is doing really good... and i did get an extension to give them my decision... we are waiting until my dad's pet scan results on the 1st to make my decision... i just don't know what to do... it is just really hard...
reneesuzy, i wish only the best of prognosis for your father. i do not know what you must be going through, but i completely understand this familiar situation all to well. you are now at one of many crossroads you will face in your life. the only person that truly knows your response to all this will be you.

my suggestion is to pause for reflection. look back on your life and dig out tough situations to analyze. ask yourself how you managed those difficult events in relation to your life at that time. based on your past experiences, how would you handle them today? now apply whatever degree of severity they possessed to the situation you face today, and amplify or scale down that degree to situation you face now. this program will be tough. can you stay focused in light of potential tragedy?

i cannot speak for you, reneesuzy, but if i were faced with the same situation, i would enroll in the program after communicating my concerns with my father. there would be exceptions under different circumstances, however (i.e. if, say, my partner was diagnosed with terminal cancer, i would delay my entrance to support and spend as much time with her as i could, both because i wanted to be with her and that she would need me to be with her, if not only since no other dependable family members exists to support her through such difficulty). but in light of the great unknown, if i had a father affected by illness, i would share with him my thoughts and feelings; my struggles of making this decision; and my loyalty for him as he bravely faces his own challenges. my viewpoint would be that my father not only prepared me to make a choice to become a life-saving member of the medical profession, but enabled me with enough smarts to qualify for such a program. if he could do that, then whatever advice he gave me now, even in light of challenges he faces, i would respect his feedback much like i had during the many years of challenges he faced raising me from birth. i would share my conflicts with my father because he is... well... my father. a person with feelings, just like me.

the decision is indeed hard. and i promise you that you will be faced with more difficult decisions. not necessarily with family members, but with friends, colleagues, strangers and patients you meet while you manage the responsibilities of your profession. this experience will make you stronger no matter the decision you make.

but, if did ask me with persistence, i say talk to your dad privately about what you are feeling. you are going to make the ultimate decision, and without guilt, but find out what he thinks is the best choice. or simply find out what he would do in the same situation. have an open discussion with him like you would with any adult, bearing in mind that he will always be your father. give him an opportunity to assist you.

[color=silver]i would love to be part of a study group if i decide to go in january...and i live in apex, so i can carpool with people too!!!
if you're ready for study, i'm ready too (and i know others who will be too). we presently have a strong group at durham tech. and a number of us are starting in january.

Thank you so much for all of your advice. I think I know what my decision will be now. I really appreciate all of you taking the time to respond and give me such great advice. I will let you know what I decide to do and I look forward to meeting all of you hopefully.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Renee

Hi everyone! Well I have made a decision...I will be attending the BSN program in January...the problem is that I have just made the decision so I need to get these vaccinations and everything else...Since I had to wait and see what happened with my dad...I am coming up to NC this weekend to attend the Dec. 6th orientation...is anyone else going?? And I know some of you have gone to the orientation already....how was it?? Did they give you a lot of information?? And what about these park and rides?? I live in Apex, so I wanted to know what the closest one was and I am up for carpooling....Well I can't wait to meet all of you...and again thank you for all the great advice....It was very comforting and helped me through this decision...

ReneeSuzy,

Orientation was a lot of information! Check out the FB group because it has a lot of answered questions there. I would get your first Hep B shot if you haven't had it yet. Make sure you sign up to take the TEAS test too. Glad you are coming!

ReneeSuzy,

Just to tag on to momofthreeboys' post, you can just show up to the TEAS test on Sunday after orientation (I was told it was fine just to show up to preferred test session). I'll be there for Dec. 6th test @ 4pm (right after your orientation). Don't worry about the TEAS test either. From what I have been told and read, it's straightforward and will not prevent you from remaining in the program whatsoever (just in case you were worried if a poor test result to hurt you).

Nevertheless, I am so happy to hear that you will be joining us. You will discover at pre-orientation how supportive the nursing program staff will be as we progress through the program. I can already tell that your fellow students, too, will be just as supportive.

You are just going to love this program. I imagine all of us will. And I can't wait to join you, momofthreeboys, and everyone else as we walk together in Carolina Blue during graduation in just a few short years. Be sure to introduce me to your father since I want to take photos of his smiling face as he proudly watches his daughter accept her degree! :)

My best wishes for you, your family and your father.

C2CNurse2B,

THANK YOU so much for the kind words!! And I really hope that my father will be there to see me. I will go to the test after orienatation. Do I have to sign up or can I go right from orientation to take it? I have to go and get ready for orientation since I am going in a few hours. Thank you again and I look forward to meeting you and going through this journey will all of you. Talk to you soon. Thanks again!

See you at school, Renee! Congratulations on making such a tough, albeit wonderful, decision. Your father, I'm sure, is very proud. :)

Hello all,

I am fairly new to allnurses.com, and so thankful I found it!!! and all of you! I wanted to ask all of you that was accepted into the ABSN program at UNC-CH if you could share any info you have about orientation dates or financial aide that you may have found out. I was originally on wait list and was just accepted. I am torn about what to do because I was originally accepted at WSSU but did not receive the funding from Baptist, but UNC was my first choice even though I live in Jamestown (heck of a commute!!!)

I appreciate any info any of you can throw my way!!

Did any of you find out anything about the parking yet?? I'm hoping and praying that you did because when I looked at the map doesn't look like a lot of options!!! I'll have a 50 min. commute.:o

Nogames-

I have about a 40 minute commute too. I will probably be parking at the Friday Center park n ride. You don't need a pass for this lot. Congrats on your acceptance BTW. :)
