Open House at TMC - Novant - Did anyone go?

Just wondering if anyone went to the open house on Tuesday at Thomasville Medical Center and how it went? What did you hear? Do they have a lot of openings?

I tried going but didn't get the news in time to go. I wouldn't have made it (I'm from IA).

Anyways, how is New Grad hiring there in NC now? It was bombarded when I tried back in March. Waiting until August to try again. No luck yet in this state.:uhoh3:

Thomasville as far as I know is not really hiring for nursing right now. Matter of fact, the Piedmont area Novant hospitals have really slowed with hiring and their use of agency staffing.

Thanks for the update on Thomasville. Are there ANY hospitals anywhere in NC hiring new grads? If you hear anything, please keep us posted. Thanks for all your help!:yeah::nurse:

Baptist was hiring new grads. They have a great orientation/preceptor program. An added plus is that it is a teaching facility. Not to take away from Novant facilities, they are good too. It's just that you would probably have a better chance of being hired at Baptist. Call their Nurse Recruiter and talk to them.

Thanks for the info. I actually have been in touch with her since last November. Unfortunately, she still has 15 employees and scholarship recipients who are still waiting for job positions and she has none at this time. So I have a feeling that won't be an option anytime soon. I'm just going to work as an RN here in IA to get experience while something opens up in NC. If I don't get into their new grad programs, I can always apply next year as a regular RN with "experience."

Does anyone have any updated information on hiring at Novant right now? They are having another Open House for new RNs into the residency proram and I was wondering if it was worth my while to fly from New England to check it out.

I got an e-mail about it a couple of weeks ago but I deleted it (sorry) cause I work as a New Grad RN at another hospital right now here in NC. I also got an Evite for it, it will be held at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte and it's for new grads who are unemployed. Novant has many sites around NC but I believe they are only hiring new grads at their Presbyterian facility right now and only in certain areas of the hospital and they're not that many new grad openings (I know they are NOT hiring in L&D for new grads this year - that I do remember from the e-mail).

I'm not going to tell you to come or not come, but let's put it this way...I drove 22 hours from Iowa with my 2 yr old, brought a whole bunch of resumes, and applied to every single possible hospital in the Triad area and I was able to land a job within a week of arriving...a WEEK. Now granted I had a good true story behind me about why I needed to move here and that impressed them, but if you drove 13 hours down here to this open house and also really put yourself out there (network, network, network) at other facilities...you may get a nibble.

In one of the hospitals that I had applied at, the nurse recruiter told me she doesn't even look at applicants out-of-state that apply online because she knows that these are the ones who are desperately applying everywhere else and she doesn't take them seriously. The fact that I drove here in person totally impressed her and she realized that this is where I wanted to truly work and live at.

By the way, did you apply for the New Grad program at Randolph Hospital here in Asheboro? Just a hint...

Thanks so much for the reply. This evite actually came from Forsyth for soon to be and recently new grads. But I can see that NC's work environment for new grads is a lot like up here........you really have to hustle up some work.

Do you like the area and find the pay rates make it liveable? That is my biggest concern........to move and find out the cost of living is higher than I can afford.

Oh yeah, I got that one too. KR is the Nurse Recruiter there. By the time I got their Evite I had already accepted the other RN job.

Cost of living is less than New England in my opinion (I grew up in MA). My monthly mortgage for a $150,000 4 bedroom, new house is about $900/mo. Full coverage car insurance for 2 cars is about $1,000/yr. Electricity $100/mo, telephone $50/mo, satellite TV $50/mo, gas prices are about $2.65/gal, and I make $20/hr + shift differential.

Unfortunately my husband is still unemployed so I'm looking for a 2nd job that is non-nursing (one nursing job is stressful enough). But if you're single and just want to come and rent, I would say your cost of living will be much more affordable. I have a co-worker who is a young, single New Grad RN and she always talks about how much money she makes and doesn't know what to do with all that money, then again she does live with her Mommy.

Good luck with whatever you do. I heard how hard it was too get an RN job in MA. I'm glad I didn't go to nursing school there.

Thanks so much for the thorough reply. I would be moving there with my husband too...........so finding work for him would definitely be a concern. It is very helpful to get your input.

I looked into Randolph but I missed their deadline of Jan 15th to apply.......oh well. Must not be meant for me.

We are considering all options and I will be so very happy when this transitional phase is over.......finding a job and settling down. Best of luck to you!

I went to the Open House for Novant - Forsyth Medical Center in December. It was my first one that the nurse managers and unit directors were there. I think it was the most depressing thing for a new grad. There were about 350 students/new grads there. How anyone managed to get an interview I have no idea. I think those who did preceptorships and clinicals at FMC where given priority. The lines were ridiculous for the ICU's, L&D, and ED. I just don't know how you make yourself stand out if you don't have any experience.

They are having another one in March. If anyone goes I suggest you bring resumes and cover letters specific to each floor you have interest in, and figure out how you are going to make yourself stand out when you meet the manager. Some managers scheduled interviews on the spot.
