Duke ABSN 2012

U.S.A. North Carolina

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if there was anyone out there applying to Duke's ABSN program for the spring or fall class in 2012. I'm going to apply, but can't decide if I should apply for the spring or the fall. If I apply for the Spring class- I will still have 3 prereqs to finish (micro, soc, and stat) which I can finish before the program starts. Is it crazy to apply to Duke with 3 outstanding prereqs? Should I wait until December and apply for Fall 2012 instead? At that time I will be currently taking the last of the prereqs. Any advice would be helpful! Especially if there's anyone who has gotten into Duke with 3 prereqs to go...

2nurse1 ,

my gpa wasn't great either- i had a 3.4 from unc. but i got a 1280 on the gre which i think balanced out my lower gpa. other than that had all a's in the prereqs, and most importantly i think--had all the prereqs finished. being a well-rounded, caring, compassionate, and driven candidate is what i believe they are looking for. good luck!

has anyone gotten their financial aid packages yet? i still haven't... it'll be over email right?

I haven't received mine, either. I was expecting it by yesterday. I hope it's soon, though, because the indecision is killing me!

Nope, still has not come. I'm driving myself batty checking email every few minutes. BTW, we just had an earthquake here in NC! Don't worry, that's pretty rare! :D (5.9 in Va, felt like

Hey all - just found this forum and thought I'd touch base - I too have been accepted for Spring 2012. I spoke with J. (in financial aid) on Friday and she indicated that they would be done with the packages by the end of the day on Friday (8/19), but they were waiting on the scholarship decisions from the faculty committee before they sent anything out. She was hoping to have them out by early this week....so I too am patiently waiting.

BTW, I live in Durham so if anyone needs recommendations on places to live, please shout. I highly encourage you to live IN Durham - even places like Cary, Morrisville, Apex, Raleigh are a good 30-45 minute drive (on good days - traffic on I-40 and Hwy 147 can be a nightmare). Plus, Durham is awesome - lots of great restaurants, places to hang out, live music, bars, and food trucks!

Congrats to all of you on your acceptances! I just wanted to chime in: I'm a fall 2011 absn student and today at orientation they told us that 2 of the three people working in the fin aid office are currently out on leave. They've been extremely busy finishing fin aid packages for this fall cohort so don't fret if you guys don't receive yours anytime soon. Just know they're doing the best they can! :)

dang...i was really hoping for this week to get everything in order before the 9th!

so since they're delaying the financial aid stuff...do you think they will push our deadline to commit back a week as well? I don't feel comfortable committing until I make sure everything is accounted for and I can get the loans I need ... do you think a week is enough to get all of that together?

Mom2Mia-I'd love to get some recommendations on places to live! I'd like to find a month-to-month in a house somewhere but am moving from CA so do not know the area at all! Thanks for any info!

so here's my take on durham, after having lived here for 8 years. disclaimer: i am no expert, nor have i ever lived in an apartment here. other durhamites, please feel free to chime in!

first: it's a city. there are good areas, not-so good areas, and in all of them you have to be smart. lock your doors, don't leave your gps or iphone or laptop in your car (it's an invitation to get stolen), and be aware of your surroundings at night. most people think that east durham is the place to avoid. generally speaking, that may be true.

durham has a few different "feels" to it - one is urban durham. the houses that are close-in are older homes, small yards, wood floors, lack garages, and are walkable/bike-able to duke, downtown, unique shops, farmer's market, and great restaurants/bars/music venues. neighborhoods in this area are northgate park, trinity park, trinity heights, duke park, watts-hillandale, old west durham, old north durham. you won't find a ton of huge apartment complexes in this area, but you will find houses for rent - or, some people have rooms for rent or a garage apartment. most of these neighborhoods are north and west of the main downtown.

another "feel" durham has is more of the suburban side - newer houses, more chain restaurants/stores, shopping centers, etc. lots of people live in "southwest durham", which extends from south durham, all the way to the durham/chapel hill line in southwest durham. neighborhoods in these areas are woodcroft, hope valley, hope valley farms, woodlake, garrett farms, parkwood, falconbridge, etc.

this site has info some of durham neighborhoods, as well as links to neighborhood websites that have them: http://durhamhoods.com/

as for apartment complexes, here are some where our patient's families stay: alexan place, addison farms, evergreens, northpoint commons, colonial village at deerfield. i've also heard about people staying at university commons, but i have never been there.

if you're looking for upscale, loft-type place, these are close to duke: the lofts at lakeview, west village (downtown), erwin square apartments, and trinity commons.

beyond craigslist, this website is for the duke community and might be helpful: http://chroniclehousing.com/

as you can tell, i love durham. i think you'll really like it here...enough to want to make you stay to get the tuition reimbursement. i'm happy to answer any questions you all might have. good luck!

i've been checking my email every 5 seconds...it's true.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let everyone know that the people at DUSON are pretty understanding about any potential issues you may have with compliances or fin aid. That being said, if you can meet deadlines, you definitely should. I'm just saying that they may make exceptions on a case-by-case basis. I had a really hard time getting my compliances resolved literally a week before orientation because I was accepted so late. My advisor was extremely helpful and understanding and I'm STILL working to finish an immunization compliance, lol, but they just ask that you keep in contact with them and let them know your situation.

Seriously guys, no worries at this point. Getting in was 95% of the battle. :)

Again, congrats, and if you have any questions I'd be happy to help.

Oh, and I'll be renting out a 2 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom townhome for spring if anyone is looking for a roommate. PM me for info.

Cheers!
