Duke ABSN 2012
Wolfpack, Summer counts as a semester, so there are 4 semesters, all of the classes are in the nursing school on Trent Drive near Duke Clinics, and clinicals will be throughout the triangle. There's no guarantee on getting a job, and you're only allowed to apply for one job in Duke Health.

UNC ABSN Spring 2012 Applicants?
Just taking a chance to see if there are any other applicants to UNC's Spring 2012 ABSN. There hasn't been a lot of activity on here from UNC applicants, but since we have about a month left I thought we could all get together and be nervous together!

Duke ABSN 2012
I decided yesterday to decline and consider other options if I don't get into UNC. I just can't justify spending so much money on a BSN when I will make exactly the same amount as my peers with RN diplomas, and even making less working at Duke for 3 years afterwards than in other hospitals in the area. The tuition reimbursement is great, but, there are no guarantees about getting hired, there are no promises that it will still exist when we graduate, and even in the best care scenario it is taxed at 38% and interest sits and accrues for years while you wait for your lump sum at the end of each year. I just don't want to start my life in the hole, and make an RN salary and pay MD loans. I don't want to discourage anyone else from going, because I already have loans from undergrad and that is a major reason I am not willing to take on so much more. McRobbins--good luck getting into UNC, I hope we both do! But if not, there are other options out there. After talking to some of the current students who were in clinical in my unit the other day, it just seems like yes, it's a great education, but it's no better than UNC or Watts unless you are dying to have Duke behind your name or you are dying to start in January. I'm gonna wait it out a little longer. Good luck to everyone, whichever decision you make! :)

Duke ABSN 2012
it's pretty ironic that as soon as i said that, just found out tonight that my nurse manager got a promotion and won't be in charge of hiring anymore. ...so...maybe duke is too risky after all...

thank you so much for your response! i feel like i'll end up working at duke no matter what school i end up going to...since i work there now and my nurse manager and i are pretty close...and she manages 2 units that have been hiring a lot lately. ( i know it's lucky). i feel like she will definitely have my back when it comes time for a job...so for me it's just going to come down to exactly how much it will cost for each place, and minimizing my loans since i already have 20k from undergrad at unc. Since Duke has the only peds acute NP program in the state, I feel like I should save my money for that. but all this talk is based on me getting into both unc and duke AND if i actually get this loan tomorrow. haha. we'll see what happens!! thank you so much.

@brinkallz: are you glad you chose Duke now that you're graduating? Did you have any other options to choose from? Now that you'll be starting to repay the loans, do you have any regrets? (feel free to private message me if you don't mind and if you think it's too personal!)

Duke ABSN 2012
@brinkallz: interesting --because when I applied on the phone we went back and forth about whether or not I was considered an undergrad or a graduate student... and I believe she chose the undergraduate option. I will definitely have to call them and see if they can change that information. thank you for passing that along! that could be why I need a cosigner and it seems no one else does--because my credit isn't "excellent" but it's definitely in the "good" range. Thanks for your help!

I applied for MedCap and they said "according to the information I provided" I would need a cosigner. I think it's because I already have loans out from undergrad.

im sorry to hear it! yes, it is a lot of money for a bachelor's. i am not sure how to withdraw. i will probably not do it until the due date since i am still sort of in denial about everything. i would love to go to unc if i got in, but with the cuts they have recently made i am not going to have my hopes super high.
