Duke ABSN 2012

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if there was anyone out there applying to Duke's ABSN program for the spring or fall class in 2012. I'm going to apply, but can't decide if I should apply for the spring or the fall. If I apply for the Spring class- I will still have 3 prereqs to finish (micro, soc, and stat) which I can finish before the program starts. Is it crazy to apply to Duke with 3 outstanding prereqs? Should I wait until December and apply for Fall 2012 instead? At that time I will be currently taking the last of the prereqs. Any advice would be helpful! Especially if there's anyone who has gotten into Duke with 3 prereqs to go...

Accepted as well! Congrats everyone :)

Congrats Everyone!!! I'm sooo excited too! We should start a facebook page for the Spring 2012 cohort just so we can all meet and see each other. Can't wait to meet all of you!!

I got accepted too!! Super psyched, hasn't totally sinked in yet though! Congrats to everyone!!

Accepted as well! I am so excited. It definitely has not sunk in yet for me either. Duke is without a doubt my first choice and I've had my heart set on attending for a while. Congratulations to all who were accepted, and for those who may be second-rounders.. I wouldn't be too discouraged because it seems that many people were unaware of the extent of the financial sacrifice as well as the time commitment of this program- maybe opening up many more slots. I look forward to meeting everyone in January. Now we just have a few small tasks to complete, and find a place to live! I am trying to decide if it would be better to live alone or with another ABSN student. I'm really glad I asked so many questions about places to live in Durham!

I've been accepted as well. Looking forward to meeting all of you in the spring!

Cherith, if you haven't created a Facebook group already for our cohort, I would be glad to create one and post the link here.

BTW, does anyone know why the statistics prerequisite was listed twice on the application? Was it an error?

congrats to those who've been accepted! i'm hoping to apply for entry into the fall of 2012 and am pretty hesitant due to my grades...i was wondering if you guys wouldn't mind posting your stats and any thoughts you have on how admissions look at applicants? thanks!

My overall GPA on the lower end and was a 3.0 but I made 3.6-4.0 with 15-17 credits the past 2 years. My major GPA was a 3.9. The GRE is what is used as a comparison if you do not have a 3.4. I got a 1210 on the GRE and a "competitive score" is now between 1150-1200, so that helped. I volunteered in various health settings (hospitals, hospice, wellness programs) for the past few years. Nursing is not a glamourous job like some may believe, and you must not only be able to master the material, but also be able to communicate well with patients, have patience, and possess emotional stability in stressful times. Duke is my #1 choice because they want well-rounded applicants and they realize the importance of a diverse candidate to accommodate a diverse population. Do not think that grades are the only factor, even though it is the most heavily weighted. If you are truly passionate about the nursing profession, I believe that will stand out. *They also want leaders. I would say we all are hardworking, independent students if we are applying to such a competitive program. However, we must demonstrate that we can work well with others and sometimes put the ego aside and realize we may not always have the best answer. The objective is to provide optimal care, not to be competitive and be better than everyone else. You must be competitive to get in as far as grades etc are concerned, but now we all have to help each other and work together in order to be the most successful nurses. I would suggest visiting the school and attending an open session. I hope this is helpful for you.

I was accepted too! Someone definitely needs to set up a facebook so us non-N.C. people can figure out some housing options and get to know others in the cohort! Does anyone else but me have zero medical experience? Congrats everyone. I agree, it still doesn't seem real.

drewmeister2, definitely set up a FB page for us! It will be nice to get to know each other etc. Thanks!

Here is the Facebook page for our class:

Duke University School of Nursing ABSN Program Class of 2013

I will try to make a nicer logo for our group (I'm working on my skills in that area), or, if someone else is skilled in that area, feel free to make one. I would use the official logo for Duke nursing, but not sure if that could potentially violate a copyright since it isn't an official Duke Facebook page.

Accepted! :) I am so excited! Congrats to all!

I got accepted too! YAY!!! Congrats to all the rest of you!

I currently live in Garner, NC (about 40 minutes from Duke) and there I will stay throughout the program because my husband and I just bought a house. It is not a bad drive, and the housing/apartment prices get muuuuch cheaper out this way. Let me know if you have any questions about where to live!

For the person who asked about stats...I got my undergrad degree in teaching in 2008 and taught for 3 years in NC. My GPA was a 3.72 so I did not take the GRE. I really think they look at your essay and your grades and your interviews as a whole....it is certainly not based all on grades. I am still working on 3 of the pre-reqs and will not be done with those until December...so that was definitely not a hit against me. I have NO medical experience at all either....I wish I could figure out their magical formula! I am just happy I made it in...

now to see the financial aid package...eeek.
