My niece is a few days past 25 weeks and in the hospital....

Specialties NICU

her water began leaking about a week or so ago (she didn't know it was leaking though) and she has been in the hospital since Friday. She is dialated around 6-8 cm, but they gave her the medicine to stop the labor. She is also receiving surfactant (I think that is what it is called) for the baby's lungs. They told her the baby was 1 1/2 - 2 lbs in weight.

As of this morning, the baby is still in the womb. His heart beat is strong and he moves all over the place. The doctor's told her there is a 90% chance she will have it within the week.

She is so positive about this baby that he will be ok and the family is trying to help her remain positive. But I also know the NICU doctor's talked with her to tell her what could happen which is good.

Have you seen cases like this where the baby actually turns out ok? What kinds of things can she expect to have to deal with?

She is only 20 and I don't think she realizes what she is up against.

Thanks

I was born at 25 weeks, 1.10 lbs. This was almost 17 years ago. Since the technology back then was different and not as advanced, i was given a 5% chance of living, let alone being healthy and "normal."

So here i am 17 years later, perfectly normal and healthy, with no medical probs whatsoever from my premature birth. I'll be a senior this year in HS, and i maintain a B average. I want a career in nursing, and i would love to work in NICU. The fact that i was born so early, and hearing about other premies and so-called "miracle babies" is what inspired me to go for NICU.

I guess miracles really can happen.

Good luck with your niece and the baby. Hopefully they'll both come out of the hospital eventually, happy and healthy! Let us know what happens. I'll be praying for and thinking of them.

25 weekers can go either way, so best of luck to your family. I know a couple that had a 25 weeker that had a bilat grade 4 bleed in its brain(the worst) NEC and a PDA. When the parents removed the baby from support her family disowned her saying that she was killing the baby because it would be retarded. That was 3 years ago and that family has never been the same. So please be verry supportive no matter what choices your niece makes!

My niece went into labor this morning with severe cramping and bleeding. They had to do a C-section because the baby had turned and was breach. She had a little boy who weighed 2 lb 2 oz and she was 27 weeks.

I don't know the length or anything else as of right now. My sister (her mom) said she saw the baby when they wisked him away and he looked long to her and was peeing as they were going by.

For now that is all I know. Thanks everyone for your posts and concerns.

I will update later.

Debi....I will continue to pray for that little boy and your whole family. Please keep us updated and congratulations to everyone! It's great that she got the extra time in for him.

Those extra days that she was in the hospital will make a BIG, BIG difference in the outcome. I'll keep you all in my prayers!

My little nephew named Raymond born at 27 weeks is doing very well. He is only a day old, but they have taken him off the respirator. They said his lungs were doing very well, but they do have him on oxygen. But other than than, he is doing pretty good. He tries to suck his thumb also. I know it will be a few months before he can go home, but each good day is a milestone in his little life.

Thanks everyone for all of your encouraging posts and prayers.

I am also praying for him, I had a baby in the NICU for 5 weeks, he wasn't premature but was very sick, he didn't live. Just trying to say I know what it is like!
