NYC and Buffalo RN pay

U.S.A. New York

Published

There is a possibility I will be moving to either NYC or Buffalo...I know there is a big difference between the two places. However, if you would be willing to share the average hourly rate for NYC and for Buffalo, I would greatly appreciate it! I am an experienced RN.

Specializes in L&D, OBED, NICU, Lactation.

Here is a link to the 2013 Bureau of Labor Statistics data from the different New York metro areas. Make sure you look at the percentile ranges and the medians.

Anyone else care to share? Particularly in Buffalo? I would like to work at ECMC...also what have ED nurse experiences been here?

Specializes in Psych, Detox, Rehab, Med Surg.

ECMC is between 25-28/hr depending on what specialty & experience, it is also a county hospital so the pay is lower but the benefits are excellent. Outside of government jobs you are looking at 26-30/hr and thats with an AAS or BSN

Specializes in ICU / PCU / Telemetry / Oncology.

In NYC you're looking at much higher hourly rates than in Buffalo. Last I heard for instance, NYP was starting RNs at $42/hr, and that's without differentials for BSN, experience, certs, and night shift.

Buffalo has a much lower cost of living than NYC. You could live very comfortably making around $30 an hour there compared to $42 in New York. Buffalo also has a lot of new medical development going on in the city right now with the construction of new hospitals and the expansion of the University of Buffalo's medical campus. The city itself is also very much on the upswing, great summers, lots of winter sports, beautiful waterfront and if you have kids it's very family friendly--plus Wegmans is there, best grocery store ever! I live in CT and would move back in a heartbeat if I was in the position.

Specializes in ICU / PCU / Telemetry / Oncology.

I lived in Buffalo for 3 years back in the '90s. The snow was way too much for this nurse to tolerate :D. Although I MIGHT consider a travel assignment there, it will NEVER be during the winter, I can tell you that much!

Actually, ECMC starts both new grads and experienced nurses at $26.47-$30.83, with a $3.00 differential for nights and another $3.00 differential if you work more than 26 weekends in the year- I just got a sheet with salary info and benefits from their recruiters yesterday. You are right though, their benefits are amazing.

The cost of living in Buffalo is SO much lower than NYC. I moved to Buffalo from NYC last year and it still surprises me how affordable Buffalo is sometimes. According to CNN's cost of living calculator, if you made $60k in Buffalo, you'd have to make $135k in Manhattan to have the same quality of life- I actually really do agree with that.

Edited to add that Kaleida is currently offering a $12k sign on bonus for some RN positions too. There are definitely jobs in Buffalo.
