New Grad Relocating from SF to NYC

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi everyone! I'm planning to book it to NYC in a few months and will be a New Grad. I've started the research process, yikes!. I saw Woodhull and am interested in working there since I'm moving to Greenpoint. Does anyone know anything about this hospital? Anyone have any advice on hospitals in NYC in general? Thanks, much appreciated!!

I have a friend who moved from L.A. to NYC back in May 2013. She has BSN & 2 years experience, 1 in med/surg and 1 in hospice. She has great references & presents herself very professionally.

She is living in Manhattan with her boyfriend and cannot find a full time job. It has been 8 months and she is working per diem for a float pool and gets a shift or two a week in LTC for about $30/hr. She has applied for and sent out resumes for hundreds of jobs, been on maybe 3 or 4 fruitless interviews. Her savings are running out and so is her patience. Things don't look good for nursing jobs in NYC for an experienced nurse. I wonder what your luck will be as a new grad?

Thanks for the post! Yeah the job market looks blahhh, but it does look better than the bay area haha. My bf lives in BK so maybe I'll at least do my job applications from there and move if necessary. Maybe it'll be different if I can get a New Grad position. Gotta stay positive!

Is it at all possible to stay put until you can secure a position. It's so hard out here on all nurses, worse for newbies. I personally wouldn't move until I know I've found something.

Apply to the HHC hospitals (Bellevue, Coney Island etc.). I've heard some new grad friendly stories from old classmates. And also if you have already passed NCLEX get your NY license ASAP. Most hospitals will pass you up bc there's an NY licensed nurse ready and right on your tail.

Good luck with your job search.

Id agree with this completely.

NY is very very hard for new grads atm, I wouldnt be surprised if it took close to or over a year to get a job.

That said if you have to do the move, I STRONGLY suggest being incredibly aggressive with the applying process from the getgo. As in apply not just to hospitals online, but bringing your resume there in person, and applying at all kinds of facilities.

NY is really tough, and NYC is by far the toughest, so do yourself a favor and dont waste anytime. Id especially try to land interviews before the next wave of graduates start taking their boards this summer.

Thanks for the replies and advice! I have applied to new grad programs here in CA so waiting to here back and there's a chance at the hospital I precepted at. If it's a no-go I'm just going to job search from BK. Luckily my bf is super supportive and has a good job haha. Sucks that we live on opposite ends of the country so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things work well! And I for sure haven't been applying bc I want a strong resume so I'm waiting until I can get my CA license endorsed in NY. Good luck to us all!

Anyone know of any Canadian RN's working in NYC? Once the arduous process of transferring credentials and getting certified for NY is there any difference in finding employment?

Any problems with having the Canadian RN education recognized? Open universities?

Thanks a bunch!
