Most in demand field for New Grads in NYC now?

U.S.A. New York

Published

So Ive been reading lots of discouraging posts regarding the status of the NYC job market. Apparently there are no Hospital jobs at the moment. Here in Chicago its pretty much the same story, hiring freezes at most major hospitals, you need a BSN or experience or plugs, essentially no hospital jobs for NGs or peri-NGs.

But, the all spanish speaking public aid/Medicare funded nursing home in the Barrio can NEVER ever keep staff... along with other terribly disorganized facilities with ridiculous patient ratios. And there is usually home health available for those that want to do it.

What is the most in-demand field that in which one could get a job in NYC?

-Home Health?

-Nursing Homes?

-Methadone Clinics?

-LTC Hostpitals?

-Outpatient clinic?

There are no jobs that are in-demand right now for new grads. Sadly, the market is flooded with new grads who just graduated, along with those who graduated in December, along with those who graduated LAST May....who still havent found jobs.

Plus there was a recent hospital closing in NYC that added a ton of experienced nurses to the job market. Any jobs that are out there will go to them. No one wants to train a new grad right now.

What happened to the nursing shortage??????????????

What happened to the nursing shortage??????????????

It seems to have vanished, or at least abated for the most part, that is if there ever really was a "shortage" to begin with, and even that is open for debate.:D

While things on the ground vary by location, for the most part hospitals and other settings aren't hiring, and those that are want experienced RNs only, with few taking on new grads/licensed nurses.

Here in the NYC area the problem for new grads is compounded by several factors. First the recession has caused hospitals to cut back on staffing due to low census counts. Next many nurses who were expected to retire, didn't because they needed to keep working. Then there is the fact we have seen several large hospitals close within the past two years, the most recent of course being Saint Vincent's in Manattan. This has put a large number of experienced RNs (about 500 from SV alone), out seeking employment.

Add to the above the constant flow of graduates every six to twelve months from local nursing programs, and you can guess what a jungle things are out there. Oh, to add to the mix, hospitals are now being very picky who they hire, and it seems many are going for BSN nurses only.

thanks for the input guys and gals. thats amazing that not even home health agencies are not looking for nurses.

I have LPN home health and nursing home experience. I also speak spanish. do you all think I could find something given that scenario?

FYI, anyone looking to move for a job RGV texas is hiring for everything, I hear its rough out in those parts though. especially if you dont speak spanish.

Well with LPN experience you could probably find work in nursing homes and home health. The bilingual should come in handy as well.
