Lehman College CUNY admission question

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi all! I am hoping to apply to the Lehman College accelerated nursing program for 2014, but I just realized that I need to apply to the college for the Spring 2014 semester. I don't need to take anymore prereqs so I would be deferring my admission to the fall.

My question is, should I apply as a nursing major for Lehman Spring 2014 or should I just apply as liberal arts or another major that is perhaps easier to receive admission for because I am now past the deadline for CUNY admissions and I am worried about getting in despite a good GPA in my first bachelors (they are still accepting applications)?

Would love to know if anyone has any insight on this topic!

Thanks!

I'm assuming you are referring to the policy that you must be enrolled in Lehman before getting in to the program. If that's the case, you can't declare a nursing major because you are not accepted for that program yet. Check with admissions. You might need to enroll as liberal arts, but possibly they call it something else.

At Lehman, you must first be accepted as a student before you can apply to the actual nursing program -- it's 2 separate applications. I don't know what would happen if you selected nursing as your major on the application you submit to Lehman admissions, but I would think it wouldn't really matter very much because they (admissions) don't decide who gets into the nursing program. I do believe, however, the policy for 2nd degree students is the 2nd degree must be completely different than the 1st. If your 1st degree was in the liberal arts, I'd play it safe and list something science related as your intended major to avoid being rejected over something small like that. When I applied to Lehman, I had science listed as my intended major (my 1st degree was sociology). Obviously if you studied science the first time around, then list a liberal arts major as your intended major.

Once your application is submitted, you have to wait for the acceptance letter from the school. If you have a decent overall GPA, I wouldn't worry about being accepted to Lehman -- it's not a very selective school, so you shouldn't have a problem. You don't necessarily have to apply for spring 2014 admission either, you could also apply for fall 2014 admission. As long as you are listed as accepted to Lehman prior to starting the nursing program, you're okay. If you do apply for the spring and are accepted, I would suggest taking HIN 269 if you can afford to take it. If you do the accelerated program, your 3 week winter intersession will consist of your psychiatric clinical rotation and HIN 269. If you can complete that course ahead of time, that will free up some extra hours so you can concentrate fully on your clinical requirements.

The next step is the HESI. It fills up very quickly, so I suggest scheduling a time now (you can go to the nursing website, click the "advisement" tab, and you'll see information about how to sign up). You don't have to pay for the exam until the day you take it, so if you decide not to apply, you can always cancel. I didn't know I could sign up before I was accepted so I waited for my acceptance letter from Lehman -- by the time it came in, every section was filled and I had to take it as a standby. It's much less stressful to know you have an actual date and time to take it.

Once everything is squared away with Lehman and you've been accepted to the school, you can then submit your application to the nursing department. It has to be submitted in person by March 15th and you will get your admission decision in June.

Best of luck!

Lets say you're applying for Fall 2014 admission. Is it possible to apply for admission to Lehman in like February, then submit the Nursing application before the March deadline? Does it take long to get accepted to Lehman?

February is probably too late unless you speak with admissions and see if they have any on the spot admission decision days. I applied for fall 2013 in November of last year and didn't receive the acceptance letter until around February, so if you can apply to Lehman right now, I would do it. The nursing department doesn't start reviewing applications until the end of May so you MAY be able to apply to Lehman a little later and not have the acceptance letter by the March 15th deadline, but that is a judgement call you would have to make. Also, check the nursing application to see if they ask when you were accepted to Lehman -- I can't remember if they asked for the specific date, but I do remember something like that being on the application.

Hello, I know this post is old but I'm hoping you can help me with my situation. I was initially enrolled at Lehman as a non-degree student in order to finish my prerequisites. My current CUNYfirst id remains active (I believe) since the last time I took a class was Summer 2014.

Do do I need to reapply to the college? Or can I apply with the ID I have?

thank you. also I already have my bachelors degree.
