Job Outlook RNBSN

U.S.A. New York

Hi

I am wondering how the current job market is looking in NYC for new grads.

Any info including starting salaries would be great. I graduated in May 2013 and am Licensed in NC. My NY license should be ready in 2 weeks or so.... fingers crossed. I am open to move and am exploring the options.

Thanks in advance....

From what I hear from my friends who are new graduates and other nurses on the floor, it is pretty hard to get hired in NYC right now. NYC is one of the highly oversaturated places for nurses. There are a lot of new grads right now and a lot of hospitals are shutting down. Many places are requiring experience before even considering applicants. The pay in New York is good but then again the cost of living is high as well.

I graduated in may as well, although I live out east on the long island and have NO interest in working in the city.

Most of my classmates love it out west though, and wanted to be there.

Getting a job in NYC is exceptionally difficult, I dont believe a single person I graduated with got a job in NYC (and I graduated with 200 somewhat people at Stony Brook)

Although many of them were from long island as well, quite a few weren't.

Theres nothing wrong with trying very hard to get a job in NYC because you might just get lucky, although I STRONGLY advise you to open your search radius a bit to include the surrounding areas.

Long island, "upstate", pretty much whatever is around.

Salaries are great though, I think 67,500-80,000 is the range youre looking at for a new grad with no experience. Maybe slightly slightly more if you land at a place with a specialty unit and a bunch of bonuses for things like ACLS ICU etc etc.

Thanks for the replies. I have been Applying to hospitals in NC for a year. Mostly close to my home. I decided that If I would have to move from my home it should be worth it. I am applying in VA, GA, NY, and NJ. Finding a job in the latter 2 states would be great because I have family I could live with to offset the higher C of L. I am definitely exploring all options .. are there any hospitals in NY that help with loan repayment??? or is that wishful thinking?

I dont know of any off the top of my head, although everywhere I looked at offers $$$ for continuing education.

What area in NY would you be looking? I know nothing outside of long island, but im sure others could help

I will be living in the Brooklyn area so I have applied to Every hospital that I see that "appears" to be under an hour drive. I will be visiting soon so I can get a better estimate on how long the actual drive to the different hospitals will take. West Chester, Montefiore, Mount Sinai, White Plains, NYP, South Nassau, Lutheran, LIJ and the list continues to grow..... I did see a Psych position in Amityville lol but that sounded spooky... any hoo I am looking every where

Good luck to you -- I find it hard to imagine that the NYC metro area would be easier to get a job than where you are in NC, though. It seems to be one of the toughest spots in the country for new grads.

Thank you--- It seems that new grads are having some difficulty everywhere. I have been applying here for about a year. I have applications at different hospitals here that have been forwarded to hiring managers and marked under recruitment review for months. Just trying to get a foot in the door.... Anywhere....

I believe St. Francis Hospital in Nassau County Long Island has a loan repayment program for new nurses hired for night shift.
