ICU nurses and Nurses at NY presby

U.S.A. New York

Published

I've searched the various threads here and i haven't found the answers i want so i thought i'd start a thread.

I am interested in working at the ICU. I'm getting ready to graduate from a 5-year co-op and besides doing my co-ops, i do work in a step down cardiac ICU full time as an extern. I just don't wish to stay in this state any more. one more year wouldn't hurt but the earlier i move, the better.

So for those nurses who work in new york, are there any hospitals that would hire grads into the ICU? I don't care if it is through a fellowship or residency program. I actually would prefer a challenging orientation so i come out well prepared.

For those nurses who work at NYPH, do they hire grads into the ICU? the job descriptions said you need one year experience. If i wasn't working full time, i would have come up to speak to the nurse recruiter but i don't have any free time now till spring break.

Also, does NYPH pay tuition if you take classes at columbia? or any of those schools they're affliated with?

I'm starting to realize people here in Pennsylvania are having a hard time finding jobs. My manager wants me to stay on my floor so if i don't find a job, i still have something to fall on. However, i really want to come up to NY and work so i would appreciate all of you who can provide any suggestions.

I particularly interested in hospitals affliated with schools that offer prepaid tuition or whatever discounts for nurses who go back to schoo while working for them.

Thanks.

Steve, I know NYP has nurse externiships, but do they offer NE positions in the NICU?

Specializes in pediatric transplant.

I've been that route, actually. I guess you could say I hit an impasse during the process and started to wonder if it was me or the system.

Not that I know of. We get a lot of Columbia U integration (preceptorship/practicum, etc) students ... but no externship. My manager does seem to be hiring lots of new grads recently...

Does anyone have current knowledge about the rate or level of ease/difficulty for fresh BSN graduates wanting ICU jobs in NY?

I was recently admitted to Columbia University's accelerated ETP program and I am exploring if the program is the best fit for me. I want to be sure I will be able to find a job if I am going to choose to pay $80,000 in tuition.
