I've searched the various threads here and i haven't found the answers i want so i thought i'd start a thread.
I am interested in working at the ICU. I'm getting ready to graduate from a 5-year co-op and besides doing my co-ops, i do work in a step down cardiac ICU full time as an extern. I just don't wish to stay in this state any more. one more year wouldn't hurt but the earlier i move, the better.
So for those nurses who work in new york, are there any hospitals that would hire grads into the ICU? I don't care if it is through a fellowship or residency program. I actually would prefer a challenging orientation so i come out well prepared.
For those nurses who work at NYPH, do they hire grads into the ICU? the job descriptions said you need one year experience. If i wasn't working full time, i would have come up to speak to the nurse recruiter but i don't have any free time now till spring break.
Also, does NYPH pay tuition if you take classes at columbia? or any of those schools they're affliated with?
I'm starting to realize people here in Pennsylvania are having a hard time finding jobs. My manager wants me to stay on my floor so if i don't find a job, i still have something to fall on. However, i really want to come up to NY and work so i would appreciate all of you who can provide any suggestions.
I particularly interested in hospitals affliated with schools that offer prepaid tuition or whatever discounts for nurses who go back to schoo while working for them.
Thanks.

New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn NY has hired new grads into the ICU---not many, mind you, but it sounds like you have a lot of clinical experience..Good luck! Surprised to hear that the job market is not great in Pennsylvania--You probably are in a rural area away from, E.G., PHILA., PITTSBURGH? Let us know how you fare.:typing

NYPH has been putting a freeze on hiring new grads into critical care areas since last summer. If you wait a while, I'm sure they'll open it up again. We just had a huge influx of new grads last time, like 10-12 for my unit alone. NYP REIMBURSES tuition paid at ANY school, up to 10k a year for full-time RNs after 6 mos employment.

Actually they are currently hiring new grads into the ICU, from what I know. Indeed I attended an "informative brunch" today for the ICU internship program that they have, which they conducted screening interviews on every person who came today. (Follow-up will later determine who gets the next interview and so forth...)
Although I'm not sure if missing today's event means missing out on the chance at the internship program.

NYP-Columbia hires new grads into the ICU internships only. There is adult ICU and peds ICU. Its a 1 year orientation, you need a BSN, a good GPA, a NYS license, and it starts in August. You have to be brand new grad. If you are interested, call human resources and ask what the deadlines are. Entry into internship is pretty competitive, so be ready with all your paperwork and requirements. Things get lost, so be ready to do a lot of follow up phone calls and visits.
NYP-C is a union hospital, so our benefits come from the union (NYSNA). You get up to 10K per year to go to any school.
good luck!

The NYPH ICU internship program offers a 6 month orientation for the adult ICUs, not one year.
It's a great program...RNs take a critical care core course for several weeks and then rotate through a step-down unit related to the ICU for which they are hired. Afterwards, the RN has their orientation on the unit.
I highly recommend this program if you are a new grad looking to be in the ICU. Columbia's ICUs have a very high acuity level and there is so much to be learned here. I am almost finished with my orientation and I have had a wonderful experience
Contact human resources to inquire about the internship program. They will be able to tell you whether they are still accepting applications. Good luck :)

Any chance there is still a hiring freeze at NYP, specifically Morgan Stanley Children's??

NYP does hire new grads into their ICUs, but I'm not sure if that applies to all of them. I was hired right out of school into the Burn ICU. I'm not sure if there is still a hiring freeze on new grads, since I was hired well after last summer.
As far as tuition reimbursement, after 6 months you're allowed to utilize it. It's 2k for programs not related to healthcare, and 10k for those that are geared towards healthcare.
Good luck with your search.
well, i'm not getting a nys license. My hospital now has 'scholarship students' they have to hire so externs who were promised jobs can't work there when we're done. Besides that, they have a hiring freeze. Looks like hospitals between boston all the way through delaware have these hiring freezes this year. So much for having something to fall on. I didn't even bother to apply to NYPH but thanks for the info. I was silly to listen to my manager cuz externs who signed contracts with my hospital had it withdrawn when this issue of scholarship students came up. I do understand though that the hospital has to get their moneys worth from these people whose tuition they paid for.
Good luck to all you grads out there looking for a job.
There is no more hiring freeze, but all MSCHONY positions now seem to require at least 1 year of experience....
Even for spots in the PICU internship? Do you know if they still accept new grads sans experience to that program, which I understand is a years worth of training?
Not sure about the PICU internship.... I know they've been hiring new grads like crazy up until recently. You may want to contact the MSCHONY recruiter and find out. I believe the orientation is around 4-5 months, and then you are mentored for the remainder of the year....
