BMCC Nursing Program Spring 2018

U.S.A. New York

Hello Everyone,

Today we took the Kaplan Entrance Exam and I thought it would nice for us to share feedback and get to know each other as we wait for a phone call.

I found the reading and the math sections to be fairly easy while the writing section was confusing. Science wasn't easy but more manageable.

I scored 71% with 3.7 GPA for pre-req. It's on the low side but still hopeful

unfortunately, no. I started reading the assigned chapters and for the online access I will ask on the first day when assignments will be posted.

Does anyone know how/ where we go to watch the assigned videos?

Professor B - - -- replied me. She is going to post course ID on blackboard, next week. I think, just keep reading until then. By the way, who registered for afternoon session? Thanks

Can anyone remind me which chapters they said to read before the first day of class? I'm going out of town this weekend and left my packet at work so I don't know what to read!! Thanks.

Chapter 6:Health and Wellness

Chapter 29: Infection Prevention and Control

Chapter 30: Vital Signs

Chapter 39: Activity and Exercise

Chapter 28: Immobility

Anyone in the morning session know are Wednesday and Thursday clinical locations different for these two days or is the location same and we are being split into two groups. Thank you !!!

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted! I graduated from BMCC's evening program a few years ago myself. Some advice, do all of your readings - yes ALL of them. Those who were looking for "shortcuts" without having completed the readings were the ones who had the most difficulty on exams and such. Don't get discouraged, especially by your first exam grades, because nursing school was harder than any other coursework I have completed previously and I have a prior BA in biology and sociology. That being said, I've heard others say that it doesn't matter what you get on exams as long as you pass. But for those of you who may be looking towards going to graduate school (like I was), your grades now impacts your academic options later.

@RiaC I just applied to BMCC I completed all my prerequisted I spoke to the nursing dept she said that I would have to have a good GPA at least 4.0 because its very competitive they look at the GPA more than than your test results, and I have to be a matricualed student to take Kaplan. The only thing that I would have to take is math for dosage class. Is the Kaplan a hard exam because I plan on taking it soon once I get accepted to the school. I've been trying to get into a nursing school for a while now its very hard and now Im trying BMCC.

Hi @louismimi,

To my knowledge, you have to complete all of the prereqs and then sit for the HESI exam. Is the HESI what you meant when you said Kaplan? I applied 2013 so it might be called something different now, but the HESI tests you on math, anatomy and physiology, reading comprehension, and then critical thinking. I think you take the HESI in your last semester of pre-reqs (the semester you apply) and there is a review book for it if you wanted to purchase one.

If things haven't changed, I believe they evaluate you on GPA (for the prerequisite courses) and HESI scores. I think the critical thinking score was used as a tie-breaker. While the program is competitive, the 4.0 GPA thing is a myth. What they do is they rank all applicants until the spots are filled. So how high of a GPA and how competitive varies from cycle to cycle, depending on the caliber of the applicants you are applying with. Thus, you have to do your best to increase your chances of getting into the program.

Hope that helps. Best of luck!

I left BMCC's nursing program. I did the readings and I saw the writing on the wall. Try not to attend the Evening program. The professor, is terrible. She comes to class late, teaches nothing and expects you to learn everything from the textbook. If you don't have a medical background don't bother with this program. Not all people who don't do well on the exams looked for so called shortcuts!! Most people admitted to the program have a high average 3.7 to 4.0. However the prereqs DO NOT prepare you for the type of exams in Fundamentals of nursing. I suggest you do your research before applying or accepting unless you have the experience as a medical assistant, CNA, EMT etc... It will give you a leg up in the program and you will be used to the material. I am disappointed in BMCC and I can see why they hide who your professor will be and what the program truly requires. Don't be fooled and investigate these schools. Some are just trying to get your money. Be careful.

Kaplan is not hard, just the grammar section. Most people fail that section. Look at my comment below. Be careful with BMCC. I suggest you try to get some medical experience before entering this program. The exams in fundamentals are hard and they require a math exam. You have 3 chances in fundamentals 1 to pass the exam. If you don't, you are out of the program. Take the dosages course very seriously. I would never return to BMCC and the professors are TERRIBLE! They are very unprofessional and try to single you out. I have seen good students get slammed and disrespected. Just investigate everything before making a decision. I saw most of the medical assistants/EMT's do better in this program.

I disagree with @TheTruth2019. Most nursing programs are challenging as they should be. Many people have difficulties with the critical thinking style of questions on exams as they require integration of knowledge and not just regurgitation of information. Hard truth is, not everyone makes it and not everyone should. Nursing programs are intended to prepare people to enter a field where your actions can potentially kill someone and not everyone is cut out to be a nurse.

I did not have a medical background and graduated from BMCC's nursing program with a 3.92 GPA. I was in the evening/weekend program and worked full-time during the entire program. I am also familiar with the professor you are referring to and I thought she was WONDERFUL. In my class, there were LPNs and EMTs that barely passed and people with absolutely no healthcare experience that thrived. For the most part, my professors were pretty decent if not great in some cases.
