2. do you have a job as an RN?

3. how long have you been looking?

4. where have you applied?

Thanks,

hello,

i graduated from camden county college in dec, 2010.

i am currently working part time as an rn in a state prison. i'm learning a lot.

i interviewed in march 2011 and got hired in april.

i applied to all the major nj hospitals and various medical day care programs. i only interviewed at senior care and my current position.

don't give up, new nurses. there are jobs out there!

Where did you apply for the prison job. Is it scary? How are the patients to you?

umdnj handles the bulk of nj's correctional healthcare. i applied on their website. i don't find it scary. it's very secure. i go through a metal detector and multiple locked doors to get in. the officers are very good about making my security a priority. for the most part, the patients are respectful. sometimes you have to be sure they're not trying to manipulate you. if you stick with the standing orders and protocols, then you're fine.

OK, I was curious about it. I saw an add in a nursing magazine but I was very skeptical because safety is hard enough in a hospital! Did you have prior experience before being hired?

Safety is number one in corrections, way more so than in other areas. That's why I'm ok with the job. They hired me with no experience, not even PCT or CNA. This is my very first nursing job.

I see they have a lot of openings on the UMDNJ website. Have any suggestions on how to apply? Did you know anyone that worked there? I am also a new grad in NJ look for work willing to commute up to an hr. The pay seems pretty good too. Any tips?

I just filled out the online application to a bunch of positions. My place called me maybe a month later. I remember having to copy and paste my resume and other info into notepad and then onto the site. Something about formatting. It'll say on there. Save your notepad info, too because you have to fill everything out for each application.

I didn't know anyone or have any ins. I felt really lucky to interview. The pay is $25/hr base plus shift differentials. You get a 4 day orientation in Trenton plus 20 shifts with preceptors. They have 8 hr shifts at my place. This could all be different at other places.

Hope that helps.
