Las Vegas - NOT new-grad friendly

U.S.A. Nevada

Published

No wonder the nursing shortage is awful here.

I graduated three months ago, passed the NCLEX-RN four weeks later, have current BLS and am ready to work, but I can't even get a call for an interview from these hospitals in Las Vegas! And it's not just me! I have friends who graduated with me who just can't believe how few openings there are for new grad RNs here.

For a state with the WORST nursing shortage in the country, you would think the hospitals here would embrace an eager energetic new grad with open arms. I guess nurse managers don't want to take the time to precept and nurture a new nurse because they don't realize what an investment it is. Give us a home and we're appreciative and likely to be loyal over the long term. Perhaps moreso than seasoned nurses.

I just think it's ridiculous that I have gotten dozens of call backs and several job offers from California, Arizona, Texas, etc, but only two measly callbacks in Las Vegas. I get a lot of "thank you but we're only hiring experienced nurses" I actually want to live in Vegas, begin my career here, and make this home, but it looks like I need to start packing my bags just like most who graduate from nursing school in NV.

Good luck with your shortage

Hi All,

Just wanted to update ya'all.

I have FINALLY gotten a f/t job!!! :yeah:

I began working Med Surg Nov 3rd.

I still cannot believe it took me 5 months! I was about [thisclose] to taking a travel position.

My depression & frustration were sooo bad that I feel almost ashamed to say that & still really want to work in L&D. However, that being said, when I was hired she knew from my interview that, ultimately, I want to end up there. It was kinda nice to still get hired with her knowing what my goals are. Guess it didn't hurt to be honest did it??!

That being said: my new job is SO much better then my last job.... but only time will tell.

Hang in there (those who are still looking).

God Bless,

MJ

No Vegas interviews yet. I had an agency that puts your resume in front of HCA recruiters. Got 1 call from MV Hosp. However, they r in the mists of blding on to the hosp & she tells me it may be another wk b4 I get a call 4 an interview on a float position. Once again, she said "call me next Tues if u haven't gotten a call for an interview". Yea... she said this b4 & I did & still haven't gotten a call for that position either. I played it off like it was the 1st x I spoke w/her...

I will continue on searching...

the thing about agencies is that they take a cut out of your paycheck for a certain number of years. i don't know if it's that way for all agencies but that's what i've heard. i dunno...i haven't received any calls either

would it be better if new grads would seek help from agencies rather than going straight to the HRs or NM?

Same story! I am looking for a RN position that accepts new grads in the Las Vegas area. I have a current BCLS and was awarded the National U Director of Nursing Academic Achievement Award. I am willing to work any shift. I passed my NCLEX on the 1st attempt and I am ready to go to work. Any advice or potential job leads out there? Thanks!

Go straight to the NM of the hospital & unit you want to work in, is my best advise. Then keep coming back... you have to be persistant & do a lot of face time. Here in Vegas "it's not what you know, it's who you know." So, network, network, network! After 4 job searchs I ought to know!

Good luck,

~MJ

Hey Congratulations!!! So...it IS possible to get a job here as a new grad!!lol!! I am having a VERY difficult time with even getting an interview. I keep getting acknowledgment/rejection letters from HR. I would love your recruiters info. Also if anybody out there has any info that will help me please comment.
