You are right, there is no way to know the thousands of drugs. Something they told us in school that really helped me on the NCLEX was to not memorize drug names but know the classes. And sometimes you can tell by a drug's name even if it's new to you, what class it's in. For example, drugs that end in " lol " are usually beta blockers. And you know what beta blockers do. So you know what the drug will do and what the side effects probably are. That's where critical thinking comes in!
That seriously helped me not only during nursing school but it helped me on the NCLEX and it helps me at work. I still look up any unknown drugs but I usually guess what they are before hand.
I hate those SATA's though. I always got those wrong in school. The thing I learned with those was to not try and overthink it... I would always click too many. I hardly ever clicked not enough.
