If you want to increase your skills and be challenged, go to St. Louis University hospital. If you don't want to be that challenged go to St. Joseph's west, Barnes-Jewish St. Peters hospital, etc. Good luck to you.

'morning, folks! i'm a brand new LPN from the joplin area. moved here from wichita ks when nearly 4 yrs old, and have lived here ever since. in fact, i live w/in 12 miles of where i grew up. this is a second career for me--have an associate degree in office administration. worked in office settings for 15 years. when i found myself between jobs 2 yrs ago, i decided to go back to school and pursue my long-simmering interest in health care. it hasn't been easy; most of you are probably familiar with juggling family, part-time work and full-time school. and hoping like heck that it will all pan out. married, have two living children and a son we lost at age 7 to leukemia (12 yrs ago). not a direct result of the leukemia--chemo knocked immune system down, c. diff took up housekeeping in his gut, pseudomembranous colitis/multiple organ shut down, etc. anyway, i truly believe that i can and will make a difference in people's lives. i currently work at a small nursing home in the area. started there as an aide, and the DON was thrilled when i got accepted into lpn school! passed my state boards just 1 week ago, so now i am a real nurse. i plan to continue my education and get my rn (via distance learning). i'm really looking forward to this career!

Welcome to the MO forum!! Glad to have you here!!
So sorry to hear about your loss. I'm sure your experience with that will go a long way toward making you a great, compassionate nurse.
Congrats on passing your boards and best wishes as you continue your education!!

Welcome Farmgirl,
Congratulations on passing your NCLEX!! Like you, I have come to nursing as a second career. I nearly went to nursing school right out of high school (23 years ago, yikes!!), but at the time was kind of intimidated by my being the only guy in the information seminar. I backed out and took another path only to find myself at 41 years old doing what I should have done all those years ago.
I'm finishing up my pre-req's this Fall and have my fingers crossed to be accepted into the nursing program at St. John's-SBU in spring '08. This site has lots of great information on it and I thoroughly enjoy reading it.
I am so very sorry to hear about your son. My daughter has had 43 brain surgeries and is terminal unless she can have a special brain surgery done by Dr. Rekate in AZ. My heart goew out to you and your family. Even though it was a few years ago, I am sure the pain is still there. I use my esperiences with bad nurses to make me a better nurse. I am sure you will too. Congratulations on passing your boards!!:balloons:I wish you luck in your new profession.

Hello all -- I am new here to posting.... I am from Cape Girardeau Mo. and am a nursing instructor. I've been a nurse for 15 years, and have worked both ends of the life spectrum. I started in oncology and hospiece and wound up in OB/NICU! Talk about variety! I am currently working on my masters in nursing education and am excited to find this community.

Welcome Jme1970!
With so many varied experiences, you must be a wonderful instructor. Are you doing remote learning?
I am fortunate to be able to attend the local university in Cape. I am not currently in any remote learning classes myself but the classes I am taking are being ITV'd to Kennett Mo. It's a great thing to offer in my opinion ( ecxept when the av equipment goes on the fritz!)

Hi all! I am from the heart of MO good ole' Jefferson City. I was born and raised here. My husband and I actually bought the house I was raised in. I am starting my second year in Jan. I will graduate in Dec 08'. I have three kids 11 year old girl, 5 year old boy, and 2 year old girl. I am fortunate I don't have to work or else I don't think I could do it. Hubby is awesome but is ready for this to be done. I am glad I found this post as it seemed that no body is from near me. Good luck to all.
