Is Umsl Nursing School Good or Bad?!?

U.S.A. Missouri

Published

Man oh man, where are all my Missourians that are supposed to be here to represent? Nobody has been on this particular forum for quite a while, so I hop that someone answers. I currently am in my 2nd year and a half at UMSL's school of nursing. I was very optimistic at first, but now I am realizing that there is a lot of uncertainty about the program. Noone can tell you when your clinicals are actually starting. Even though you might be done with pre-reqs, others who have started the program at an earlier date take prescedence. Certain classes are not offered the way they should be. The admissions counselors at the college of nursing can't tell you much either. I'm like, why I am there? I am seriously thinking about transferring to the BJ college of nursing. I know that they are awesome, but it comes with a hefty pricetag. UMSL is so much cheaper, but can you put a pricetag on your education. Being a nurse is a serious deal, and the process and learning experieces should be as smooth ans stress free as possible. The classroom experiece and labs/clinicals should be intense. I like it that way. It prepares you for the field. It is all the b/s that I have to put up with outside the classroom within the school is what I can't stand. Does anyone else share my opinions about UMSL and their nursing program? I heard it used to be a lot better when it was affiliated with Barnes. That could explain a lot. It used to be Barnes College of nursing at UMSL, but they parted ways. Share your experiences with me about the school.

I am at UMSL right now. I love it. I've been there since the second semester of my freshman year after 1 semester at Mizzou. I am in the accelerated program, and it's super tough, but I think it's the best school in St. Louis. The vast majority of the teachers are great. The advisors, on the other hand, aren't so hot. You have to do a lot of the research on classes on your own, which is unfortunate since it's their job to do that for you. But they have a long wait list which is constantly being revised and updated. Anyway, I would totally recommend the program to anyone who's willing to work super hard.

WOW--

I am so sorry to hear this about the nursing program at UMSL. I graduate in May from St. Louis Community College @ Florissant Valley and I was thinking about coming to UMSL to get my BSN. I am happy that St. Louis University, and Maryville University are close by because I also consider them great school with great nursing programs. I hope think work out for you.

Yikes....seems I have read there were problems with the program over the past couple of years (faculty? director changes?)....anyway, I'll be attending St. Louis Community College, so can't be much help....I do hear that Barne's program is awesome, but the tuition is definately painful....there are reimbursement possibilities once you graduate, however...

Good luck.....

I'm at UMSL now as well and I don't think that the school is crappy at all. Most of the instructors are wonderful, knowledgable, and I love my classmates.....however I will agree that the advisors are not so great. I have pretty much been my own advisor for this whole program. But if you are looking for a good nursing education, I would definitely recommend UMSL.

please be very careful not to mention specific instructors by name. this is a very busy bulletin board which is widely read throughout the world. there are significant legal issues for concern. who knows? maybe a college instructor is also a member of this bulletin board! also, for the same reasons, please be careful with regards to "dissing" specific colleges.

thank you for your consideration.

Hang in there!

Most nursing scholls offer a whole lot of hoops to jump through. I just started a BSN completion program that is supposedly geared to adult learners and you would not believe the busy work that has no basis in reality.

Just keep plugging away and before you know it it will be over.

Oh, definitely have had experience with the "busy work" at UMSL. Not to say that I haven't learned a lot and feel prepared to begin nursing practice as a new grad, but some of those courses in the BSN program are all but useless. Oh well, as long as it gets me the degree!

Does anyone have any idea what GPA would be required to be competative when applying to UMSL accelerated BSN program?

i know we live in a very litigious society and agree with the moderator about using people's names, especially in a defamatory way, but is there risk involved in giving one's opinion of a particular school or program, be it positive or negative?
