Want the real scoop on new grad pay in Mississippi?

U.S.A. Mississippi

Published

I just got back from a meeting at Baptist in Jackson. I have lots of information on their new grad salaries and benefits. I'd be happy to share, if anyone is so inclined just let me know. If no one is curious, I'm not going to waste the time typing it up.

Tomorrow, I'll be visiting UMC in Jackson and Friday I'll be at Rush in Meridian. I'd be glad to share those details as well. :)

Got the info from UMC today. Any takers? :)

manna, I would love to know what the pay scales are. I am starting 2nd career in August with Nursing school.

Thanks and good luck.

Good luck, Tandi! Where are you going to school?

Keep in mind anyone, these are what I was told are new grad rates

Baptist-Jackson:

The nurse managers I spoke with said that there had been some discussion about raising new grad pay rates to be more competitive with the region, not just the metro area - but that no decisions had been made regarding those pay status changes.

$16 hour GN/$16.50 RN

Shift diff of $2.00-3.50 (evenings/nights)

Weekend program $24.50 (available to new grads after orientation) - pays only for actual hours worked

Clinical ladder - $1/1year, $2/2 years, $3/3 years

Yearly raise of 3-4% based on performance reviews

UMC

Base $16.50 ($17.00 if did an externship at UMC)

Clinical ladder $1.00

ACLS $0.50

Shift diff: evenings 10% base pay, nights 15% base pay, weekend days 10% base pay, weekend evenings 20% base pay, weekend nights 25% base pay

Hi manna, I will be going to Hinds at the Rankin campus, starting August.

I have received my acceptance letter and now I am waiting for a letter to

let me know what shots and anything else that is required before we start.

I am so excited, I have always wanted to do this and now I have the chance.

Where did you go?

T

Well, double congratulations then! I wish you the best of luck!

I met and talked to an RN today, working NSICU at UMC, that graduated from Hinds! :)

I'm graduating from MUW in Columbus this May! :)

i used to work weekend program at Baptist, I made darned good money for a new nurse! Its the only way to go, everything else is a ripoff. Actually, big hospitals are exploiters of nurses, especially new ones in general. Thats why i have left. Now i make $35 an hour and have a much more reasonable workload, and the company i work for, unlike the liars at baptist and St d, openly state that they are for a profit, which is at least honest.

I used to work the weekend program at Methodist Rehab, next to University. I agree, weekend programs are definitely the way to go if you're a new grad. I had lots of time off and made really good money (worked weekends and nights for three years)....

Is that all that nurse make really? I might be moving to Mississippi sometime next year if we get married. Right now I live in Indiana and I am an LPN and I make $15.60 per hour (with shift diff) working nights on Med/SUrg floor. I'd be taking a HUGE pay cut....or if I finish the RN program and moved down there, I'd only make a dollar more an hour???!!!?

Specializes in Float.

Stephanie..will you be moving to that part of MS? The pay is better up north.

Anyone know what pay rate is for GN's at for profit hospitals in Jackson area? My friend was told that a nurse manager could make 100k based on profitability of the area you manage. I work as an er tech in charitable hospital and have seen 12 nurses leave in three months. Is life better at for profits or just doing clinical hours 8-5 m-f?:uhoh3:

As far as I know, around $16/hour is the base new grad pay for ALL the hospitals in the metro Jackson area. Of course, weekend option pays more (around $24 at Baptist I know, not sure elsewhere).
