Baker College - Auburn Hills - LPN - questions

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

I have read a number of posts on Baker but they are mostly for other locations rather than Auburn Hills. I saw a LOT of angry and unhappy people and only one person that was happy with Baker. I am concerned. I would REALLY appreciate your help by giving me your thoughts and feedback on your personal experiences as soon as possible because I have registered for the Baker in Auburn Hills classes for January 2009.

I need three classes as pre-reqs to the LPN program. I decided to go that route rather than the RN - ADN program in Flint because I will be able to receive my LPN in one year and the Auburn Hills campus is applying for its PERMANENT approval from the State of Michigan for their LPN program. They expect to receive it, and I was told by the state that schools generally receive permanent approval without problem if no changes have been made to the program from the initial approval.

When Baker Auburn Hills receives permanent approval they plan to apply for a LADDER program and offer the RN - ADN program that will be a ladder moving from the LPN certificate seamlessly into the ADN - RN program. The good news is that they hope for approval of the ADN - RN program quickly and they hope it will be only an additional 3 months on top of the LPN program.

That was good news.

Also, I chose Auburn Hills because the LPN program accepted ALL of my eligible classes completed at other schools, and the Flint ADN - RN program only accepts a maximum of 25 credits from other programs.

1 - I am concerned because I have to compete with other students for entry into the LPN program and I don't know how hard the classes are or what grades I will get.

What grades do you need to have to get into the program?

How hard are the pre-req classes?

What is the competition like?

2 - I am concerned because none of the classes transfer to a 4-year univ and I definitely will complete my RN and then either go on for a BSN or MSN completion. But I definitely will NOT stay with only a LPN.

Do you think we will be able to get good jobs with a Baker LPN degree?

Do you think we will be able to go on for a RN and then a BSN and then a MSN if we want at another school when the Baker classes don't transfer?

3 - They are 2-3 times more than community college costs - but I can't wait 2 years to get into a 1 year program and I can't get fin aid for comm college because I have too many transfer credits. I am trying to obtain No Worker Left Behind $10,000 FREE money but so far I have not been able to move it forward until I receive an acceptance letter INTO the actual LPN program. Because they cost so much they are taking money I need to live on and it is a real commitment on my part.

What kind of quality of education will we get at Baker for the money they charge?

4 - I have A&P 2 with Moutafian and Into Algebra with Govil and Med Term with Olley. Has anyone had any experience with these teachers?

I cannot afford to pay for this school use a lot of my fin aid and then not get into the program. Any thoughts?

Just as a side note, my Admissions Rep is really great and the Director of the LPN program has been very helpful.

Thanks for your help! :wink2:

I am signed up for the Med term and then I am going in to register for the Nutrition online class, how was that online? I am already down by 2 points because of some other stuff that happened at CT Baker, and that is what held me back from getting into the RN program there. I am hoping the HESI will be like the one at MCC because that wasn't too difficult. But are they timing the Hesi at Baker? That would make it more difficult. I can only hope that I can bring up my gpa and do great on the HESI to make up the 2 point loss, or I am screwed again....LOL I was told that about 100-120 people are applying this year for the LPN, so that makes it even more difficult. We shall see. Best wishes to you.

Who are you taking Med Term with? If Dr. Kash, then he is a blast. He is quite funny and provides you with a pretty clear outline of what you'll need to study for the tests. Most of his tests are bad at all, as in not tricky. Nutrition online was good and quite interesting. I had Kristine Bassett as an instructor last fall. Perhaps the hardest assignment was to create menus for specific patient groups, such as teenagers, seniors, diabetics, children, etc., but it wasn't bad at all. The hardest thing was trying to not be repetitive with food groups and such. I think the HESI is probably the same, although there must be more than one version of it or in the questions that are asked, but I'm not sure. You should be good on that then. I figure that if I need to make up any points, I will have to do it on the HESI. There are 12 pts available, so I'm going to do a basic review of everything between now and June. There are some excellent threads on here about what may be covered on it, which was helpful. I think there is a four or five hour time limit on it, though I can't remember what they said exactly. If you read everything and do well on your tests, Med Term should be fairly easy to get an A in and, as you said, on the HESI points can be made up. Think positive! :) All my classes had been online until I changed my major to nursing and started at AH, so I was a bit nervous, but my first quarter was great. Yes, Christine had said they expected quite a few more applications than last year, so I was expecting that. Remember, there may be a second program starting in January or so, so if you don't get into the fall one, you will get an extra point towards that one. I can't wait until next June to apply again, either, so I'm really hoping for a winter start in the second program if I don't get into this one. However, just think positive, study hard, kick butt on the exams, and all should be good!!! :) Good luck! :)

I do have Kash for med term. Thanks for letting me know about him. I will have to start practing again for the HESI. Want to get in the 90's. Thinking positive here...You too! it will be great to meet you in the program!

Great! He will tell you that if you compliment him on his tie and shirt combo, he'll give you a bonus point. He doesn't, of course, but he likes to be well-dressed so jokes about it...lol. He does usually gives a few opportunities for bonus points. For example, he might say that if you remember the parts of the digestive system or urinary tract, he'll give 3 bonus points (you would note them on the back of the Scantron during the weekly test - he'll tell you when). I think he gave us about four opportunities for bonus points, although 3 was the most, usually 1 or 2. If you leave class early, you may miss important info. He keeps any 'extras' until the end of class, at least he did in our night class, i.e., the midterm review sheet was given 2 weeks early to those who stayed until end of class. He hates when people don't attend the whole class and then do crappy. Anyhow, I'm sure you'll do great. Yes, HESI in the 90s would be great. I am not one of those super optimistic types, LOL, but when it is so out of our hands, as this type of thing is, all we can do is think positive :). It would be great to meet you in September for sure, although they may have some meeting beforehand that we all have to attend. :)

mrslg,

Thank you so much for the heads up on Kash! I really appreciate it. I was going to go into AH today to sign up for Nutrition online, but just got called into work early....Ughhh.....Oh well, I will have to try to do it tomorrow. I am like you not very optimistic on the tests, for some reason I always come close but never "good enough"....LOL It is out of our hands, we can study and prepare as much as possible, but then just give it to God and let Him do the rest...

Hey if you want to study together for the HESI, let me know, that would be kinda cool, two heads are always better than one.

Again thanks for the info on Kash, I am looking forward to taking his class.

YW! He is an easygoing instructor and will do what he can to help you if any problems. He's great. I had a problem with my Achilles, and he was the one who convinced me to get into the doc ASAP. If you e-mail Nara, she will probably sign you up online, if you are going to take it online, but perhaps even if you are taking it in class? No, I am never optimistic about tests, but I usually do better than I think I'm going to LOL. I am a bit anal about constant review and study, though, so that helps. :) I'm not sure how to PM on here, but if you know you can PM me and I will give you my e-mail address. I'm really not very good at studying in a group or with anyone, but perhaps we can meet at the school one day - my classes start next week (Tues/Thurs), although first aid doesn't start until 4/17 for me - and we can put our heads together for a review. I've learned a ton on this site about what I need to study, so I'm very thankful for that. You probably have your own perspective from having taken it before. :)

Panky1 - I'm not sure if you replied by PM or not, but I just realized that I cannot yet send or receive PMs as I don't have 15 posts in. Unfortunately, I usually just have time to come in for a quick read through new posts and hadn't read all the rules. I think that if you click on my name it brings up a message box thing, though - at least that is what it looks like to me when I click on my name...lol. Otherwise, I'm going to check the nursing board on Tuesday to see when the meeting is and what it's about. I've been to the informational session, but that was awhile ago, so I may attend the next one, too, to see if anything has changed. Okay, we're only getting sun for one day it seems, so I'm off to try and get some outside (and inside as usual) stuff done :)

Hi mrsrlg, I did try to click on your name and no pm'ing yet. I am also starting on Tuesday. I am at class from 1:00 - 2:40 with Kash. I have to go to MCC from 11:00 - 12:30 then run to Baker 1-2:40 then run back to MCC for class from 3:30 -5:30...I have do this on Tuesday's and Thursdays...my gosh what have I done to myself....LOL It is only for 6 weeks I should be able to do this...LOL not that the husband likes it. But I am trying all avenues to get in somewhere. I asked yesterday about the meeting on the 28th and no one and I mean no one knew anything about it. huh...I will check out the board also on tuesday. Have fun working inside and out, I am going off to work today from 3-12...

Hi, Panky. Yes, silly me...I never thought about not being able to PM yet, but I think I only need another couple of posts, so I'm close. LOL. That is some crazy schedule you have! I'm in class from 11-12:40 and 1- 2:40 on Tuesdays and 11-12:40 on Thursdays. Then, on 4/17, I start first aid for health care providers from 9-12:40, but only for 3 weeks. I plan to spend the rest of my Tues/Thurs (and weekend days) studying for the HESI. After reading a couple of posts on here, I purchased a secondhand Math for Meds book from Amazon, got the HESI study guide, and then also will review the West Coast University HESI study guide/sample exams found on the site here. From those, I will do what I always do, which is to basically extract what I consider important (guessing, of course) and make up my own study notes. I also have my A&P I handouts to study. It has been a long time since basic math, so will review that as well while working through the Math for Meds study guide. I work at home as a contract medical transcriptionist and compete for my files, so I otherwise don't leave the house much. It is not the optimal for me to be in class during the day for my work situation, but it is what it is...lol. Those flexible hours will help a lot if I get into the nursing program. :) The meeting is probably another informational meeting b/c there were only 6 of us or so at the first one. There SHOULD be a notice posted on the board outside the health sciences office. Well, have a good day at work and enjoy your first class with Dr. K on Tuesday. Somewhere along the line we'll have to figure out a way to meet after or in between classes :)

Hi mrsrlg,

I am kinda of curious as to why you purchased a Math for Meds book? Did they say at the meeting we will be having that on the hesi? For the MCC hesi, I studied from the HESI book at that worked out fine. So I am just wondering if you think that will help in the math portion? Thanks

Hi, Panky. No, no...nothing was said at the meeting about the HESI, except that we will not need chemistry. I read that Math for Meds was very helpful for the HESI on here. Because it provides a basic math review, as well as some practice conversions to grams, mg, etc., it would be helpful on the HESI. As I wanted to do a basic math review and study conversions and such, it seemed like a good idea to get the book. Plus, I bought it secondhand on Amazon for $5, so well worth it if it is helpful. Also, I figure it could be an early intro to Pharm :)

Okay I understand now. Thanks!!! Sounds like a good idea, which book did you purchase? I looked at Amazon but really didn't see a Math for Meds book...Is there a specific name? Thanks....As soon as these last two classes at MCC are done, I am going to brush up again on Hesi, which hesi book do you have? I really need to study A*&P again.....
