I have worked in a community hospital 15 miles north of Boston for 6 years. When I graduated from NS in Dec 2009, I had hoped that there may be a job for me by June or so. No such luck! Not only are they not hiring new grads- they are going to be laying off 75 -100 employees in the next 5 weeks. They are getting rid of the CNA's that are graduating NS too. I will be included in this new policy. It stinks and I am so upset about it. I love my hospital but I guess my loyalty means nothing.

I am lucky though to have a per diem RN position at a Nursing home in Somerville, but the pay is on the low end and it is not what I thought I'd be doing as a new grad.

I hat to admit it, but at this moment nursing school was the biggest mistake of my life. My credit went down the drain, I can't afford health insurance (but I make too much to get state aid) and I have no money.

You are completely right but I don't think you needed to be so harsh.

If you follow SarahBeth's posts, they are always very helpful and informative. She knows her stuff when it comes to this topic because she's one of the ones who went through it. She may have sounded harsh, but I think she was just trying to be brutally honest and to the point because the same question gets posted over and over despite very recent threads with answers.

Everyone says I won't have trouble finding a job as an LPN.

However, I beg to differ. Everyone is being slaughtered reimbursement rate wise.

Take what you can get.

My biggest fear is being stuck working part time nursing hours and having to move BACK IN with my parents.

If you interview well you will get a job, however the issues cannot be ignored involving reimbursement rates being even lower.

Rumor floating around is that UMass Memorial will be laying people off. This according to the Telegram & Gazette.

If you do not have minor health issues like me. I would join the military or public health service, pay off your student loans and by the time your done serving you country for 5 or 10 years (lets say) then HOPEFULLY, things will get better as our seasoned nurses retire.

It is very difficult. It took me a year to find a full-time job that isn't in the best of places, with 5 years behind my belt and 2 years hospital experience. I found out along the way that I am not a good enough candidate for the hospitals. Most of all the letters I have received stated, "They hired a qualified candidate". I am pretty much back where I started in Sub-Acute.

During orientation there was a New Grad who it took a year for her just to get into LTC. It took her months of pretty much calling once a week just to talk to someone to get her foot into the door. It was for an 11 to 7 shift where she would be working all by herself. I wish her the best, because luckily when I graduated jobs were plentiful and orientation was excellent!

This is my first post so don't shoot me if this in the wrong forum. I am a male who will be graduating with a diploma from Brockton. My questions are 1. Is it easier for a guy to find a job as an RN and do you think i will have trouble finding a job with a diploma.

I also have a BS in mechanical engineering i don't know how that will play into it but maybe a prospective employer will see that i have a BS?

Thank you PediLove2147! How awful that someone could put such a harsh remark on here. I don't even like coming to this website because it really discourages me. I am a new grad also looking for a job in Boston and I am beginning to wonder why did I bother becoming a nurse or why did I bother going to school at all? I wanted to better myself and looks like I will be applying at retail establishments or restaurants. By the time I get a job nursing I am afraid I will be so rusty on my skills I won't be any value as a nurse. I am not picky and will work anywhere at anytime. This is majorly depressing. What a waste!

No, being male doesn't give you any advantages, and most candidates have a bachelor of science in nursing anyway. Very few hospitals are hiring associate-prepared nurses currently so yes, I think you're going to have serious difficulty finding a job. For those who I'm being harsh, reality for nursing jobs is what's really harsh. I'm being honest about the situation. Psych facilities and facilities that cater to male patients ie. like a facility for veterans and prisons are very likely to hire a male candidate.

As a boston based nurse with 6 years of experience. I am underemployed myself and have been looking for work in California and colorado. I would not recomed anyone to move here, the job market is tight. There are a lot of nursing schools here putting out new grads. The competition is tough. New grads who work as CNA's at the hospital I work at tell me they have submitted 100's of applications and I have talked to two women who graduated in 2008 and just found there first RN jobs. Good luck on your search. Have you tried the VA web site, they hire new grad, you have to be able to move though.

You are so lucky you can move. Agencies won't hire me because I haven't been working in a hospital for 2 years. I am not even a New Grad. Any places that you know of that do relocation that isn't an agency would be awesome. Message me.

Dance4life, check out Texas based hospitals. They are a state that still has a nursing shortage for the most part, and hospitals there often assist with relocation.
