getting into roxbury community college nursing program

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

HI! i was wondering if someone could help me. I've applied for the nursing program at rcc for Jan 2011 and i'm doubtful if I have a chance of getting in. I have a gpa of 3.01 but my gpa for the pre-requisites is much higher. i got an overall score of 84.1% (89th percentile rank) on the teas with 82.5% in reading, 84.4% in math, 83.3% in science, and 85.5% in English. The program average was 74% with 86.9% (mean) in reading, 68.1% in math, 64.4% in science, and 75.4% in English. I'm just really worried because I didn't score higher than the program average on the reading. Does any one know if that'll hurt me a lot? What part of the teas do they look at the most? Plus I got a letter in the mail from them saying my application is incomplete because I didn't hand in the immunization form. It also said that I need to hand it in in order for them to accept me into the college. It ended with "we look forward to seeing you next semester". Does this mean I've been accepted but they're just waiting for me to hand the form in?

Got my acceptance letter today so hopefully you know too by now...

GUESS WHAT? I GOT MY LETTER I WAS ACCEPTED:anpom:

I got in, too!! See you at orientation!

Many Congrats to you all! Good luck in school.

Keep me updated on how you like the program etc.. (well whenever you may have time, ;).. pretty sure NS will keep you all busy!)

Again Good luck. I wish you all the best and maybe in a few months I will HOPEFULLY be in the same position!! Cogratssssss!!

I know in a year or two someone is going to be in the situation of waiting for a reply from RCC. So hopefully the following will ease your mind, just a bit: It appears that reading and english scores are huge factors in their decision (I got a 90% and 85% with the science and math at 70%). Finish not only your prereqs but the required courses to graduate from the college. I took the exam (last exam offered) on October 15th but didn't hear anything until Dec. 9th. The orientation is being held on Dec. 13th (not a hug heads up). Classes start Jan. 11th so everything we need to know will be shared on during the orientation and everything we need to do has to be done by Jan. 8th. Oh, one more, if you are accepted, don't forget to email your reply immediately. I almost overlooked that little part.

Hey just checking in.

not sure of how often you guys are checking this site anymore. But I wanted to know how everyone was liking the program so far!

Good luck with everything!

The program is good so far :)

We begin clinicals this week - so it's exciting. We had our first two exams already. Tomorrow is already the 1st of March - It definitely feels like time is flying. In a couple weeks we have Spring Break. Then our third exam. Some parts still feel very surreal. Good luck Trendzetta - Please keep us updated when you apply to the program :)

I am a recent RCC grad. From my understanding, RCC admission department is notorious for messing up/losing parts of applications. Even those with stellar grades and TEAS scores. They sometimes question if you graduated high school, even when you bring them your transcript that says you have completed a bachelors degree.

Hi Fullefect,

I agree. Even when I called to apply, someone at the desk told me not to mail in my package, but to turn it in personally once I had everything completed.

Congrats on graduating :yeah:

I wanted to ask, how did you like the program overall? I'm only in my first semester. Did you like clinicals? Have you taken the NCLEX yet? If so, have you had a hard time applying/finding for jobs? Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

Thanks... well some clinicals are great, some are bad. It really depends on the instructor you have. I would say that half of them were really good, some good, and about 2 of them that were not good.

I just passed my NClex 7 days ago, and I just starting putting resumes out 2 nights ago. No calls yet, so I am not a good example of the job situation yet. I come from a Bio background, so I have no Nursing experience. I am going to assume I will not be working at a major teaching hospital. I am hoping to start off at a Long Term Sub-acute floor, rehab, or maybe even a LTC. Then from there I will move to a major hospital after some experience. If it takes longer than expected I will move elsewhere, there are areas now in the country that are hiring new ADN into major hospitals, just not in Boston from what I hear...

I am assuming that you are doing the night program?? Theresa is good, she is the best of the Night instructors.. Good luck.. I recommend

Thanks for all of the info! Good guess and yes I really like her. Congrats on passing boards!! That must've been a huge weight off your shoulders. Have you heard anything yet? Please keep me posted. I'm planning on applying for a PCA/CNA position after this clinical semester. Did any in your class do that - If so, did they find it helpful when applying for jobs after graduation?

Best wishes and thanks again for your tips :)

So far I have had 2 interviews.. I am going back for a second interview today at at sub-acute floor in a rehab facility north of the city. I have no CNA experience so I do feel that I am at a disadvantage.. By the time you graduate, all of the old timers will stop delaying there retirement and jobs should be very much more opened up..
