Hi all,

Is there anyone in this forum who works at BWH? I'm currently working in a hospital here in San Francisco & looking to move back to Boston next year. I work in TICU - Transitional ICU. I'm just wondering if BWH has a TICU unit. I like working in critical care. I have 1+ yrs. of experience so far. Thanks!

Glad you like it. Most hospital nurses work 12 hr shifts. The downside of working on this kind of schedule is that you leave the house when it's dark (except in the summer) and you leave the hospital at the end of the shift when it's dark. There is no fresh air in the hospital and windows don't open. Where is no sunlight inside. You babysit a group of the same patients for 12 hrs. Nurses in general are very vulnerable to abuse not only by doctors, but even more by other nurses and patients' families (there is a research on that). So I would recommend to anybody who decide to choose this profession to get hired as a CNA first and work for a month or two before advancing any further.

Yes, 12 hour shifts can be a grind, but I no longer want to work a 40 hour week again. In particular have a Mon-Fri schedule. To work 5 days for 2 days off seems a bit much for me. The 12 hour shifts aren't for everyone, and I do agree that a prospective nursing student should work as an aid to see if nursing is for them.

I honestly like being a nurse. I like my work schedule, and the pay is not bad either. I work three days a week and get 4 consecutive days off. In other words, I work 12 days a month and 6 months a year. The pay is good also (1.6 years experience $36.73/hr).

Sure some days are better than others, but that can be said about any job.

Does the pay you quoted above include weekend differential? For those who can do these hours, I think it's great.

Yesthe pay includes weekends. I do the weekend program (Sat, Sun, Mon) for family reasons. The schedule works fine for me at the present time. If I didnt work this schedule my pay would be $32.50/hr which is still not bad for 18 months as a nurse.

So if you work 36 hours, do you still get payed for full time 40 hours?
