Hi, any Coppin State University students,Any advice!!

pick another school!!!

I will be starting the nursing program at coppin next fall. Why does everyone always say its not a good school? It's always no don't go to coppin but why? I never hear a reason. Is it because it's a historically black? morgan has a nursing program as well is that any better? Should that not be considered also? I known people that have attended coppin and say its a great program. Just curious.....:)

For some the issue may well be race related. But racial implications aside, Coppin has, historically, among he lowest first-time NCLEX pass rates in the state. According to the Maryland Board of Nursing website, other four-year state-funded nursing scholl average a pass rate 5-10 percentage points higher. [ADN programs do 10-20% better - for half the tuitition!]

This is factoring only students who graduate. Take into account that historically black colleges in Maryland have a lower graduation rate than their better-integrated sister schools and the start-to-finish numbers would look worse. A freshman entering Coppin has, on average, only a one in five (20-21%) chance of leaving any University System of Maryland School with a degree within six years. Even factoring race, that's pretty bad. The typical black freshman entering UMBC has a 40% chance of graduating from that institution, and a 60% chance of leaving another with a degree in the same six years. These numbers are from a study commisioned by the USM.

Taken together the numbers add up. In my nursing program, the first day of school you looked to your left and looked to your right - those people wouldn't be there at graduation. If 100 freshmen enter the nursing program at Coppin, 20 will graduate and take the test. 12-15 will pass and become nurses. If there were ten rows of seats in that freshman class, you might have a coworker who sat in your row, but probably not.

Look, where you go is your decision. But considering the sacrifice that many make to go the nursing school, and taking into account that you might only get one shot at this, my advice is give yourself the best chance. Numbers can lie, but they can only tell small lies. If someone is telling you that this school is your best bet -they're probably not telling you a small one.

Good Luck,

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I must admit Coppin is not my first choice. But my GPA is not I feel enough to get into a school of my choice (UMB). Currently I'm taking my pre reqs at BCCC, and even thought about their ADN program. Their NCLEX pass rate is pretty high (last time I checked) and as of right now it's first come first serve for that program. But it's still competitive you have to be one of the first applications in. I know for a fact I will become a nurse, I'm very passionate about it. I'm just really indecisive about the route I want to take to get there...it's sometimes really frustrating for me.:(

I am a senior at Coppin state! I would not talk down on my college! Coppin rates are not that good I admit! I wouldn't trade my HBCU exp. for anything!!!! Since your gpa isn't that good I see why you are looking at Ccoppin... Every nursing school has its up and downs. I just would make it my first choice if I had others. I don't know your race, but I had a friend who went to UMBSON and she stated that UMBSON is a very racist school for color people. That was not my first time hearing that. If you would like PM me and I will give you my number.

Hey I just looked at your PM and I don't know how to reply back... I am new to this network so just email me [email protected]. I really would ike to talk to you.

In what way was UMB racist? Give examples?

I'm a junior at coppin. I feel like I'm being taught the skills I need to become a excellent nurse. If your GPA isn't that good that doesn't necessarily mean you'll make it at Coppin or any other nursing school. Nursing school is hard work. Try to get your grades up and learn some good study skills. I'm not saying the program at Coppin is perfect (it's not), but I have worked with some damn good nurses who were Coppin graduates.

I just wanted to share my experience with Coppin. I applied to Coppin for the Fall 2009 semester. I ended up never hearing back. I'm assuming I got rejected because you needed a 70 on the Reading Section of the NET and I got a 67 both times I took it. The math was not a problem for me. My other issue was that I didn't have English 102 done in time so I couldn't start my level 2 nursing classes. I was pretty disappointed because Coppin was actually my first choice. My dad works a Spring Grove Hospital in Catonsville and introduced me to Professor Black and the students that were doing their clinical there. I really really liked Prof. Black when I met her. She seemed like one of the most helpful, sincere, positive professers I've ever met. I also got really good vibes from the students. The only thing I was warned about was how unorganized they are. That was not the first time I heard that and boy were they right!!! But, every school has its ups and downs. My GPA is mediocre...not too bad but def not high enough to get into UMB or Towson. But I'm gonna apply to them anyway...doesn't hurt right?

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone from Coppin new about the changes they're making in their cirriculum/admissions. I'm going to apply again for the Fall 2010 semester. I heard from Mr. Best and Mr. Boyd that they're going to be using the TEAS this year instead of the NET. I already took the TEAS and got an 84.1 overall and a 90 in reading. So, hopefully that helps. Also, I heard that they were trying to make it a 2 yea(4 semester ciriculum) like the 2+2 format like UMB, Towson, and Johns Hopkins has....has anyone heard anything about this?

Just was wondering if u found any info out yet and how is the admissions process going for you
