ccbc essex???

I have read a few not so great comments about the program at Essex. I was just accepted into their night/weekend program. Could somebody fill me in on the program what you like/didn't like about it. TIA Lisa

Can you elaborate on the pros(if any)/cons of the program? Is it related more towards the teachers? Administration? or lessons taught? Do u get the appropriate information needed to become a knowledgable nurse upon graduating? Do u have any inout on the Catonsville program or any of the othe CC RN programs(Howard Co?)

Any details would be great! I just really want to make a wise decision to ensure a positive experience that will enable me to do the best job possible. N clearly administration is not going to tell u that their program sucks!

I am HS senior and I am visiting CCBC Essex Nursing tomorrow...it looks like a great program! :D

I am so jealous of those of you going to college this fall! I have to wait another year in useless HS!! Although I plan to test out of most 'easy' pre-req classes asap.

Don't take everything people say to heart- your education is what you make it! Just do your best and if you can continue your degree in an RN-BSN college! Its a great way to cut costs by going to a CC.

(ps. Lisa, I have a family-friend who is a surgical nurse at St. Joes who says that of all the nursing schools in Maryland (for RN) CCBC Essex has proven it self to be great. Plus, they have not had the accreditation scares that a certain nursing program has had in the past months.)

What a wise young women you sound like! You might also check with CCBC to see if they will let you take a class or two during your last year of high school to get a head start. Wishing you all the best. With your attitude there isn't anything you can't do!

So far I have heard good about CCBC Essex (I am not too familiar with the other CC programs though.) and everyone who has heard of, or works with nurses who went there, says that CCBC Essex is so much more education than the money it costs. The price is so comfortable and reasonable. Just for that alone, I will take a moody professor or 2! :chuckle

However, I recently did hear that professors were not much help and maybe not too interested in helping students outside of class time. But, honestly, the students are paying for class time credits- and the professors are not to be held responsible if the student does not understand. They are offering a paid service! Surely, I believe the claim was biased. Perhaps the student was not as diligent as they could have been- it is much easier to blame the teacher (like in High School!) than just admit that you messed up and didn't stay focused. Plus, if one does not understand, it is better to ask questions in class.

So, it is really your call when it comes to CCBC Essex. Maybe visit, again if you need to. Talk to everyone you possibly can and really ask tons of questions! At the beginning of semesters, ask professors if they offer help after class or have a nearby office that you could stop by if you need something explained again. They normally will help if you ask for it ahead of time- they don't like when students wait until they are near failing and suddenly realize that they need to get back on track. Any teacher hates people who waste time.

It's not a bad program. I'm getting ready to start my second (and last) year. I've heard so many people bad mouth the program and get people all worked up. I was petrified when I started because of all the rumors. I've never had problems with the administration. I'm assuming the "abuse" mentioned is the lab instructors and clinical instructors who want us to do things correctly. There are some that are tougher than others, but it's just because they want us to be good nurses. There were times when they were strict, but you can't take that personally. Just remember if they are being harsh or strict with you, they are probably being that way with everyone. It's their license on the line if you do something that endangers a patient.

So far, my experience has been positive. Yes, I get stressed before tests and projects, but that is to be expected.

If you listen to the school and don't overload yourself and prepare your family for the time you'll need to put into school, you'll be fine. Give yourself time to study the information and understand the skills you'll need. Take nursing school seriously and let the instructors know you take it seriously by coming prepared and following their directions (I can't stress that enough). They remember who does and does not come prepared and they also know which students are the most reliable.

I don't regret my choice of nursing school and I was torn between CCBC Essex and Maryland's second bachelors program. I chose CCBC because it's convenient, parking is free, it's a good program, and most of all it's cheap! I plan on working towards my BSN and then MSN, but I decided to get the RN first, then do a RN-MSN program and let my hospital pay for it. It has definitely saved me some cash.

Good luck to everyone. I know that there are some that probably disagree with me and may have had bad experiences, but I also know I'm not the only one that thinks the program is solid.

Thanks so much Amanda! I start the Evenings/Weekend program on 8/19 at Essex and I'm so excited! I just passed dosage this morning on the first try so I'm ready to order my uniforms and books!! :yeah: How do you pick up your patient info on Friday's. What's the time frame? I'm coming from Owings Mills so Friday afternoon traffic is going to be a huge pain.

It depends on your clinical instructor. Some don't even make you go on Friday's and just give you your patients that morning and let you look up the medications. If you do have to go on Fridays it just depends on when the instructor gets there. I had one that said we could come as early as noon. Most say after 5, but keep in mind, you can get into the hospital late if you have to, but you just have to look up your medications and understand their illnesses before clinical the next day.

My high school bad mouthed CCBC horribly and I felt like I was making a bad decision- but honestly, CCBC nursing is better than Stevenson! And I think the difference in price should help people make their decisions! Not the name!

I'm just seeing some of these posts. I apologize to the poster who wanted info from me. I hope you made a good decision for you and your family.

Ok, now for my response. I can't speak for anyone's experience but for me and my classmates. CCBC Essex overall was not the greatest experience. They really did us dirty in one specific semester. I'm not going to get into that, since at the end of the day, most of us prevailed (in one way or the other), however a couple fell through the cracks (aka failed out of school) because of it.

I will also say there's was a difference in how the evening/weekend people were treated as opposed to the daytime folks. The irony is that the eve/weekend people had a 100% NCLEX pass rate and the daytime folks didn't.

Just like the above poster said, if you are diligent and study, study, study, you will be fine. I just want people to go in with their eyes open. Get support from your family and get support from your classmates. I can't emphasize how important a solid support system is.

If I had to do it over again, honestly, I would've gone to Catonsville. They're a tighter group and have more support from the instructors and administration.

But everything happens for a reason. I absolutely love my fellow classmates and perhaps that is the reason I ended up in the eve/weekend program.

Wow ... what to say about Essex ...

I graduated from their program in 2005. The schooling was no joke. It was intense, stressful, tearful ... all of the above. But I got through, and in the end I felt nothing but completely prepard for the real world of nursing. I sat for my boards two weeks after graduation, with no remedial NCLEX preparation course, and was in and out of the NCLEX in 45 minutes ... I kid you not. And most importantly, I passed on the first try... the majority of my nursing class did. I started at Johns Hopkins 2 weeks after my boards! I'm currently a nurse in Virginia Beach and have returned to school for a RN to MSN bridge program for nursing education. All in all I had a wonderful experience. The schooling was hard, but well worth the time and money. And again, what is most important is how totally prepared I was for the real world of nursing! There's a comfort level that I had straight out of school that a lot of BSN prepared nurses who started with me did not. And today, 3 years later, I still have a wealth of knowledge to fall back on when necessary (and I do, often!) If you take the program seriously, and study your butt off, you'll be just fine ... I assure you! GOOD LUCK!

Anyone care to share their GPA/ TEAS score? I'm tryna get an idea of how difficult/competitive it is to get into CCBC. I have a 3.03 GPA and an 84.1 on the TEAS with a 90 i reading. I'm applying for Spring 2010. I'm sooo nervous!!! Does anyone know if admissions are less competitive in the spring because there are less number of applicants?
