I find myself at very stressful point in my life as Ill be starting my LD/OB clinical rotation next semester. The prospect of what ill be asked to do there terrifies me and I wish I could just pass with the theory part. Ive always been a very awkward guy and intensly uncomfortable in any sort of intimate situation (im straight but im still a virgin but plz dont ask about my age it just never seems to work out and i sure been trying for a long time :( and i think it would prob be topic for another forum) But for me I guess its going to creat a HUGE white elephant in room when ill need to see my patient and make her feel very uncomfortable too as she sees how unconfident i appear. I was rather pushed into nursing out of secure career considerations and am running out of options now quickly. I really want to suceed but dont think i have the psychological strength to suceed in nursing if its what is required of me in clinicals.

It will work out dude... just watch out, sometimes after the baby pops out, there's a giant vacuum that sucks unsuspecting nursing students into the uterus. Make sure you have a good grip on something solidly attached to the floor.

I'm sorry, BUT...

One thing is to be scare of what you haven't done and worried about getting it right. It's quite another to submerge yourself in a career that is not your calling just because of financial reasons. Truth be told, it seems to me nursing is just not for you. Having said that, there are many other areas of healthcare that you can prepare for that would match your personality.

If you are worried about being stuck in a dead-end job the rest of your life... guess what?! If nursing is not truly for you, you will feel that way no matter how much money you make.

I suggest you look into other healthcare programs that allow you to make decent earnings and make you feel confident and provide the best care to your patients. For example: radiology technologist, surgical technician, or physical therapist. Look at the entire list of programs from your local public university. See what sparks your interest, then do research on where would be the best place for you to obtain the education.

Trust me... if you don't feel a vocation towards nursing, you can't force it... and it will never come to you. This happened to me in the accounting field for 20 years. Now at my early 40s, I'm following my heart, not my pocket. It has made a world of difference.

Good luck to you!

I think guys can be competent OB/LD nurses, just like I think women can be competent doctors. It just depends

on their attitude and professionalism. I'd even think a male OB or LD nurse would have a unique opportunity

to create rapport with the patient's husband or partner, and ease everyone's anxiety.

I went riding bikes with a big burly dude in my local bike club a few days ago, and found out he was the supervisor

for an OB/GYN unit for a number of years at a local hospital. Never would have guessed he'd be the type to be excited

about babies.

And, P.S. lady partss don't bite, except the ones with teeth.

Just don't see a straight guy working comfortably in such a setting.

I would be a midwife in a heartbeat if I thought i cold survive financially, I am very strait, married, have one child and planning another.... this comment is as stupid as the people that think males can't be nurses. Further as a former Lt./driver and career FF I have worked in many situations and drug/cut/ hoisted people out of places most would not dare enter and done it along side women more capable than I. So check yourself when assigning gender roles, it can get u in trouble professionally and socially.

Off my soap box now.

I never held a baby until mother baby. It was a shock for me to like the LD floor, it may just be how the nurses work as a team(atleast at the hospital I was at). I was very impressed, reminded me of what I saw on an oncology floor.

I realized I do like newborns....

After family I realized I started learning more about the female body than some of them know.
