I think that I may be the oldest male nursing student when I enter this fall

Nursing Students Male Students

I have completed my pre-req's after this semester and have applied to a couple of ADN schools. I've been assured that my scores are high enough to get into either of the schools. I will be 64 years old when I start this fall. I decided after retiring from a career in medical diagnostic sales to do this because it is something that I've always wanted to do. I became interested when serving as a Navy Hospital Corpsman but got sidetracked and ended up with an MBA in Healthcare Administration and a long successful career. Now I am fulfilling a dream. I'm in great physical shape with good longivity genes and expect to work at leat 10 years when I get through school.

Am I the oldest guy doing this?

64 years young my friend...I'm 35 and starting school in August, but at my interviews last week I saw a few "more distinquised" gentlemen interviewing as well, so I say not....besides you bring a ton of life experience that everyone can tap into along with your work experience....best of luck

DUDE!!!!!! You inspired me! I'll be 55 when I start an LPN program in the fall and I was worried about being too old. With your background I'm sure you are going to be great.

The oldest person in my class, who happened to be male, was 52, but several of us were over 45 at the time. Maybe we need to start a thread about the differences between perceptions of newbie nurses who are young or older. I definately experienced age discrimination because my chronological age was greater than my nursing age such as "you should know that, you're a nurse!"

Best of luck to you in school! I so much more appreciated the learning now than I did in my early 20's!

Your my HERO!!!! :bowingpur

I'm a first year male RN student, and I'm 23. To me it's great to see older guys in the class - there are enough stereotypes and preconceived notions about men in nursing as it is, and having men from all different backgrounds and walks of life enforces for people that men have particular strengths and characteristics that make them great nurses, just like women.

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

I'd say go for it. You have to do what makes you happy. I'm sure you will be a great nurse.

After seeing the ages posted here, I'll have to stop feeling sorry for myself for being the only 41 y/o starting the RN/BSN program this coming fall.

 I'll happy pass the title to you! I will be 58 years young when I complete my LPN program this August. While I never believed myself to be the oldest nursing student ever, my review of posts prior to my enrollment last year certainly made me feel like I was pushing the envelope! Best of luck to you!

I'm trying to get all pre-reqs out of the way. Really, two classes left that are required before nursing classes start this fall. Algebra & Chemistry. Squeaking through Math, took Chem 121 last summer. Prof. was from Nairobi, English was 3rd language, not a good teacher for a not good student! I lost my seat in the RN/BSN prog. 'cuz of the D in her class! Starting Again this Fall.

Meant to say that this is first semester when 50% of Prof.s are older than me! Usually runs 75%! Always older than at least 3 of 'em! Only 2 are older this term. Almost always oldest student!!! Everyone looks 12 y/o!

Hey, that's great!!! You might very well be, I wonder if there is a data base nursing book of world records anywhere?

I had a patient who had gone to school with some of my co-workers at your age. She worked for 10 years before retiring. I currently work with a 70 year old nurse who is fit as a fiddle and sharp as a tack. She's a very down to earth, cool lady!
