Hey guys, I was just wonderin, since I'm realtively new here, who you guys are, and what made you choose nursing, and what you guys do to pass time and relieve stress while in school?

Let me start, My name is Mike, I'm 20 and from Ohio, fresh outta highschool I chose engineering, following my dads steps, except for mechanical, I chose software. I attended about a semester of the program, before I realized that it just wasn't right for me, I've always been drawn to the hospital, but I knew absolutely nothing about it. Well in May I had an accident while training for an MMA fight (ufc style fighting) and I spent sometime in the hospital, where I had the coolest nurse take care of me, before that I was always like "me a nurse? yeah right" but I politely asked him about his job, and the schooling, and he gave me a paper to fill out and allowed me too shadow him, after two days I was hooked. After I recovered and regained mobility in my shoulder and knee, I enrolled for my pre reqs, applied to nursing school, and haven't looked back since. I'll never forget the look on my parents face when I told them what I did (I kinda flew under the radar with the whole process) my mom was in tears she was so happy. All my friends are still tryin to find themselvs, while me never being a big fan of highschool, I absolutely love every moment of this, even the pre-req portion (cept math lol) when I'm not at school, I wake up at 3am, and work at McDonald's till 1...but that has to stop this coming fall, studying is more important, and I know it's going to be a real hard semester. I like to golf, I went to states in Highschool for golf +3 handicap, I love MMA fighting, playing guitar, and lifting.

I think it would be interesting to get some replies please?

Hey man! Im also a 20yr old male. I was going into business and got a year into it and hated it and switched to nursing and everyone especially my parents were shocked about it. I to have never ever looked back after changing my major to nursing and i love the classes. I am about to apply for nursing and i will hopefully get in in the spring of 07. Im 21 and im so glad to see other young guys in here with me. When i was 13 i had a BAD BAD motorcycle wreck that almost killed me. I was closelined by a barbed wire fence and it cut all the way across my neck. missing my carotid artery by less then a 1/2 inch. A nurse set in the room with me and held my hand for the 4 hours it took the plastic surgeon to put me back together (132 stiches). I started school wanting to be a firefighter, but soon changed to nursing with hopes of becoming a flight nurse. My mother is a nurse and my lil sister is about to start med school, so it kinda runs in the family.

Hey there....I'm just out of the navy...was a surgical technician for them for 5 yrs. My last duty station was in San juan, Puerto Rico where I found a accelerated 2 yr BSN program. I have 10 months to go...can't wait...miss the states!

I'm Eric, I'll be 28 in a couple of weeks, and I work as a Neonatal ICU nurse. Nursing wasn't my original plan either. I notice that lots of us had personal experiences with nurses that influenced us, and the same is true for me. I was a spina bifida kid, so I was around lots of docs and nurses growing up. Originally had my sights on becoming a doctor, but my direction changed as I got older and became more involved in healthcare. Nursing has been great for me!

Outside of nursing, I'm very involved in Toastmasters and I enjoy baseball a lot. I'm a lifelong Astros fan. When I have the money, I love to go to the dog track and blow some of it.

Good to see others around my age. I'm 19, just finished my first year of college, switched my major three times. I originally started in this 7-year med program but had to drop engineering calc and didn't want to retake it, or wait 11 years to start my career. Switched to education, switched to English/psych, then had a few experiences: surgery w/very patient and knowledgable nurses who answered my 2000 questions, strangers telling me I should go into the medical profession, a lot of things that made me realize I didn't want to forget about doing something medical and being a doctor wasn't the only option. So here I am, hoping to get into my school's nursing program in the fall of 2007.

Hey guys...

I'm a little older than *(some) of you, but at 35 I find myself again pursuing the nursing dream. I started this dream in 1988 but couldn't find it in my heart to finish.:o

I became an EMT, then a paramedic and worked in the field for awhile, leaving to work in the hospital. Now I've worked hard and I'm working to fulfill my dream of becoming a nurse...so here we are.

I too, spent a lot of time in the hospital as a kid, hydrocephalus made my head so big that my body just caught up last year ;-). I'm certain this influenced my decision to become an RN, having had to have 2 shunt replacements in the last 4 years...all after 27 years of no problems!!

Oh, and BTW..Eric E. is a great source of info on these boards.

I too, spent a lot of time in the hospital as a kid, hydrocephalus made my head so big that my body just caught up last year ;-).

Not to sidetrack the thread, but thanks for the compliment. Mainly I just try to stay out of trouble here. :)

I will be graduating in May 07, with my BSN, looking forward to moving back to the states and finding a nursing internship program with ER or ICU. I'm currently working in a juvenile detention center for some extra pocket change.
