Nursing Students Male Students

Hey guys, I was just wonderin, since I'm realtively new here, who you guys are, and what made you choose nursing, and what you guys do to pass time and relieve stress while in school?

Let me start, My name is Mike, I'm 20 and from Ohio, fresh outta highschool I chose engineering, following my dads steps, except for mechanical, I chose software. I attended about a semester of the program, before I realized that it just wasn't right for me, I've always been drawn to the hospital, but I knew absolutely nothing about it. Well in May I had an accident while training for an MMA fight (ufc style fighting) and I spent sometime in the hospital, where I had the coolest nurse take care of me, before that I was always like "me a nurse? yeah right" but I politely asked him about his job, and the schooling, and he gave me a paper to fill out and allowed me too shadow him, after two days I was hooked. After I recovered and regained mobility in my shoulder and knee, I enrolled for my pre reqs, applied to nursing school, and haven't looked back since. I'll never forget the look on my parents face when I told them what I did (I kinda flew under the radar with the whole process) my mom was in tears she was so happy. All my friends are still tryin to find themselvs, while me never being a big fan of highschool, I absolutely love every moment of this, even the pre-req portion (cept math lol) when I'm not at school, I wake up at 3am, and work at McDonald's till 1...but that has to stop this coming fall, studying is more important, and I know it's going to be a real hard semester. I like to golf, I went to states in Highschool for golf +3 handicap, I love MMA fighting, playing guitar, and lifting.

I think it would be interesting to get some replies please?

Thanks,

Irwin

hey guys,

awesome to see so many of you here! i'll be 18 in may, and plan to move to az w/ my mom, and go to a community college there to get my adn starting this summer!

my whole life, i wanted to own a business, or be an airline pilot. my sophomore year, i was considering news and broadcasting. i remember my dad asking me "have you ever considered nursing?" and i was like "hell no".

i got a job at a nursing home last april. as i started getting interested in my job, i actually thought about this nursing thing. i only made up my mind late this past summer. i even went on a job shadow at our local hospital. it was incredibly boring, being a monday, but i was still interested. unfortunately, i didn't change my classes to include a&p or medical terminology, but i'll get those in college. i'm really excited and can't wait to get started. i'm so far ahead of myself that i put my username as nursingstudent, even though i still have a cpl months to go!

thats pretty much it. pm me if you wanna know more!

Not a man, not a student. Have been reading your posts and wanted to tell you all I think you are all awsome. I know each and every one of you will bring something positive to nursing. We sure need more guys, not for just the heavy work but to put a new spin on how things are done. I especially want to give a special thanks to the vets, had 13 uncles who served in every branch since WWII, and now have cousins in combat. One has expressed the desire to do something medical after this last tour in Iraq, so who knows, nursing may be his thing. Have a great day.

i started many years ago of dreaming of becoming a paramedic for the fire dept. i obtained my emt license, but the competition for firefighting jobs was awful. met my wife who was a nurse and decided to give nursing a shot, no pun intended.hehe.. went to lpn school and worked for eight years as a nurse... changed careers to paralegal, let my lpn license lapse, big mistake. decided to go back to school to get my rn and become a nurse practioner. had to retake the nclex, took it last week and passed and now have my lpn license back. i will start my search for an lpn job, and hopefully will get accepted to an rn program this fall...

Hi, I'm J. I'm 20 years old and have been in the navy for the last 3 years. Joined when I was 17. I'm a Navy Hospital Corspman by trade (if you don't know what that is just ask I'd love to show you that amazing community). I decided to go into nursing because of my work as a corpsman. As a corpsman you have a lot of direct pt care, except with the military you have to move more often than I would like. Plus, I know that I can make a huge impact in many lives becoming a nurse. I'm going to excelsior because of the flexibilty and being on active duty its basicly the route to go. I know other corpsman that this program worked great for. I'll be on these boards forever, and i'm looking forward to getting to know you or helping anyway that I can. Thats what we do, lets keep it going in every aspect of life.

hi guys,

sorry to be lurkin' in the shadows of your forum, but i had to write to tell you how awesome i think you all are. i am a female rn, working on a med/surg floor with all women.... except one awesome guy who works the night shift (hence, guess what shift i work?). he has been a rn for over 30 years now, and has such a plethora of knowledge, it blows me away every day. he was my preceptor 4 years ago when i became a rn, and we bonded immediately (i've always gotten along better with men in general, i just can't take the whining and backstabbing that comes with most women), and he and i have become the closest of friends. he is my mentor, my hero.... everything i've ever wanted to be in a nurse, and i thank god every day that i've had the opportunity to work with him. he brings a fresh approach to everything that we do, and you know what? he has an edge too.... being the only male nurse, he's never forgotten by his patients. he leaves a mark with everyone he interacts with, and i can only hope to one day, be half the nurse he is now.

good luck to you all, and keep the faith.... i hope you don't mind my occasional post here and there with you guys... i think i could give you a lot of pointers and experiences from working so closely with my hero.

you guys rock, and make work so much more enjoyable!!!! :icon_hug:

Specializes in ER/ICU.

Hi guys! I am 33 (a little older than many of you but see some of my age as well). It is my second career. Have a degree is Chemistry but of no use. Have been in the medical transcription industry for 10+ years but more on the technical side of it as a liasion between operations and IT, worked in various capacities mostly management. As you know anything in technology can be outsourced, was lookign for a secure career. Originally, wanted to be a doctor, but because of financial situation and time, I couldnt and now I am a father of 2 girls, busy busy. Apart from safe, secure future in nursing, the deep satisfaction of helping someone has drawn me to this field. Money will be the same for me more or less. Nursing informatics will be a best suit for me because of my tech background in computers and clinical background now that I am studying......I am currently a nursing student in first semester (just got accepted this semester).

Glad to join this forum. Btw, this is my first posting....

Hello, I'm 33 also. I guess it just took me a while to realize what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I took a sort of roundabout path into nursing. I've worked at many things throughout my short life including a 5 yr stint in the USN, and always made enough money to support me and my family, but I was not happy or challenged in the least. My mother inlaw is a retired OB nurse (35 years), and my sister-inlaw is a HH and Hospice nurse. They encouraged nursing for me, and the more I researched the better it sounded. While I don't think I'll ever be rich working as a nurse, I will always be challenged. I'm now in my second semester of core classes and clinicals. I'm in an 18 month RN program which runs straight through the summer, so I graduate in Dec. I'm one of two guys in a class of 25.

Good luck to you all!
