A classmate wants to know if I'm gay. How should I respond?

Nursing Students Male Students

:uhoh21: I'm not sure how to handle this. Today a friend of mine told me that a classmate of ours was fishing for information regarding my sexual orientation. This male student was asking inappropriate questions. It makes me uncomfortable that he feels the need to bring this up with other classmates of mine. I am gay. This however, is irrelevant and frankly none of his business. It has always been my policy to keep my home life separate from nursing school. We spend so much time together in clinicals and class and I have a feeling the rumor mill will be churning. Should I let it go? Bring it up with him?...

I wouldn't even give a response. It's really no one's business. Unless you are interested? :)

Specializes in LTC.

When people bring up personal topics that I'm not completely comfortable with I simply shrugs and say: "There are three things I don't talk about at work sex, politics, and religion."

Specializes in PeriOp, ICU, PICU, NICU.

Seth, it's no one business but yours. I am not gay, but I can tell you it irritates me to death when ppl try to inquire about why I have been married 5 years and have no children-as if it matters :uhoh21:

I don't need to tell the whole world or anyone that I perhaps am sterile. Some people have way too much time in their hands.........something I don't, and even if I did-I'd expend that energy elsewhere.

I agree, maybe he is gay himself and wants to know if you are too ;) BUT, he should ask you directly and not get middle men involved.

I would definitely find a way to approach him and flat out ask why he wants to know. It is up to you if you want to disclose your business.

Best wishes to you!!

Jess

What's your personal sexual lifestyle got's to do with being a student male nurse?

I come to this forum to read about students getting into nursing...not their personal lifestyles whether their gay or not.

This particular forum is turning into a gay soap opera....and not everybody's a gay male nurse (like me). And if I was gay, I wouldn't post topics like this.

Anybody agree with me?

Well lets see..YOU SAW THE TOPIC and clicked on it. If you don't want to read about personal lifestyles..THEN DON'T! I had a personal problem in my nursing class with a student. I wanted opinions and I got them. I think your post is offensive. If you were gay you wouldn't post topics like this? If you were gay, you'd understand why I posted a topic like this.
