Do any of your facilities have a social media policy? I know posting on Facebook is protected speech but it seems to cause trouble. I have staff members complain to me that their co-workers posted something nasty about them. I want to tell them to get off Facebook if reading posts upsets them....that's why there is an OFF switch

I'm thinking that maybe some employees don't recognize it when an employer does give them loyalty. I've seen my manager go to bat for employees who were clearly in the wrong . . . work her butt off to try to "rehabilitate" employees rather than just fire them for well-documented chronic lateness or absenteeism. I've seen the hospital keep people on the payroll when they go out on one medical leave after another, or one deployment after another. Yes, you get to keep your job if you're deployed . . . but the law doesn't say you get the same job and same shift back after you've been deployed for so long that only the manager remembers you . . . and she wasn't the manager when you deployed. One of our employees nearly died from a cardiac arrest three years ago . . . hasn't been able to come back to work and probably never will be, but she's got a locker in the locker room, a line on the roster and she'll get her job back (and her straight day shifts) if she ever is able to come back.

I've been lucky enough to work in some great hospitals that really show their committment to their employees. And one that didn't, but that was back in the 70s, so you cannot blame the new generation or the economy for that one.

At my work, we not allowed to put we are employees by the facility on facebook, talk about employees, pt, if there is a pic posted and it's from the facility it's all automatic termination.

I personally think companies and managers should spend their time online learning new ways to improve their own circumstances instead of looking at potential candidates personal circumstances. You can't judge a book by a cover. There are people who belong in therapy and/or jail hiding behind pristine profiles. Why not hire based on their resume and interview presentation and let them prove or disprove themselves on the job. The fact that I know people act like we're in high school on the job is the exact reason you will not see me responding to a friend request.

Facebook and social media goes both ways. It can be a career breaker and a career builder. Social media e-professionalism is important every time you put yourself out there on social media.

Too bad the administrators don't take something from the postings re their own performance and impact on their workplace.....

A local facility has an CEO who is older than dirt and came in, I believe due to high stature in community, (not his/her work in LTC) and the other administrator is well....a piece of work.

Word is the new philosophy is to have ONLY part time employees (read -no medical benefits)...

so good for continuity of care.....not

so good for morale...not

so good for the patients, who NEVER know who will we working....not

so good for the per diems who are not there long enough to "get into the flow" and remember the little things that matter...not

good for the bottom line...you betcha

I was visiting a facility where a new CNA came to the DON and resigned on her first day on the job. Someone had posted something mean about her on facebook after she got to work. The astounding thing was that three of the managers in stand-up handed me their phones at the same time so I could read it. (I am "corporate"). so I looked around and said "How many people are on facebook right now, while we are paying you?" The front desk receptionist had her phone in a public facing area, with facebook up. No one had gone on break and the posts were all timed since the employees had clocked in. How do you have time to POST (never mind read) this stuff when you have 10 patients to wake up, toilet, dress, transport to breakfast, feed and clean, re-toilet, you get the picture. The administrator was on paternity leave and no one was running the building. I emailed everyone I could think of and two weeks later there was not a phone in sight when I walked in after the administrator came back. I was astounded. I love checking facebook AT HOME or at night in the hotel room when travelling, but NEVER

Not only are people on FaceBook where I work, but they're taking selfies of themselves at work and posting them on FaceBook. One of our unit secretaries averages four selfies a night -- WHILE SHE'S WORKING. If she's not at work, her many selfies include her S.O. Just tonight there's a picture of someone drinking from a urinal and eating from a bedpan (at least she's in the breakroom), three different pictures of people's socks (OK, the socks are colorful, but really?) and a group photo of a departing employee and her best buds. All posted while at work, and it's just barely midnight! Don't tell me everyone's midnight assessment, vital signs, I & O's and meds are all done and charted!

Oh gosh. Selfies while clocked in? That would make me cringe. You can never be too careful. I've talked to CNA's about this. Plus, you never know if there is patient- identifying info in the background.

Unrelated, but in the past week, I had to counsel employees on: not being on the Internet in the UM's office while working and wearing headphones while working.

Who would even consider that? That's the second time on here I've heard of that. Wow.

She was upset when I told her she had to take it off. I'm sorry, but not on my shift!

They can have them when they're clocked out. Lol.
