Just looking for support....words of encouragement.....advice....anything you've got to give!

Started my first DON survey, my first Q.I.S. survey and survey with surveyors I have never worked with before (all tho I'm told that they are much more fair and easier to deal with then what I'm used to). Gonna be a long week.

Thanks to both of you. This QIS survey process is somewhat frustrating. I'm used to trying to manage a survey process. I'm used to knowing what they were digging into, I'm used to trying to "argue" why we did what we did, etc.

Heck I might as well go on vacation with this process. I don't have a clue how we are doing. Could be good/could be bad. Think that makes me more nervous than anything.

Yes, in a wierd way, it does seem much more detached, and as they don't do a verbal exit everyday, sometimes you can actually take a breath here and there. Days 1-3 are not too bad, it's when they go into stage 2 that gets a little rocky. If you want to know WHO will be looked at, pull your QA/QI report, and pick your top 10 (and include skin in that top ten, plus any Hospice, endof life folks). THEN, pull out your blank incident reports, your state hotline number and get ready for the "allegations"that never fail to come out during QIS. This is my 2nd QIS survey, and my 3rd survey in less than 10 months, maybe I'll be a pro at the end of this one? My only complaint is when they are parked in the nursing station, phone/fax ringing, trying to do patient care etc and all 4 want something, from....me. HaHa! It does make the days fly!! Best of luck to you! We are in day 3 today. ( I might regret saying this, but I am starting to like QIS a lot more than the old way, those bluepapers, jammed pack full of the hand written documentation,and then daily exit were a bit much, so....subjective).

Thanks Pixie. It's day 3 for me too but they transitioned into stage II at the end of the day yesterday so you are correct, today was a little more hairy.

I'm scared to say this...but in a whispered voice (my gut tells me this is going very well). We have answered every question, found every document and been able to "prove" our case on everything asked today. They seem satisfied with answers we give them. They have interviewed with resident council president (she can be a crabby ole thing some days and I was fearful of this) but they didn't come back with any allegations. We did have one lady tell them we lost her clothes and someone at sometime was too rough with her. They called her family - family said resident meant missing nightgowns and family reported to them that they heard it too, came in and checked and all clothing is accounted for. We investigated roughness - got a whole different story then what she had told surveyors. We told them about entire different story - they went back in to check with her and they got entirely different story then originally stated so they dropped that. (We are getting U/A to rule out UTI). Med pass is done with no concerns. They have watched 2 meal services and don't seem to have any concerns.

My building is small so I am hoping that if we can just get thru tomorrow we will be on the downhill slide. I am anticipating Friday being mostly a paper day for them.

Not sure if it's universal, but in NC, the surveyors pay their own salary. I mean their department is totally funded by the fines they levy.

This makes for a very tense survey, nasty questions, nasty attitudes. We actually got cited because a standup lift was dirty on the place where the residents put their feet.

Thanks for asking but it hasn't happened yet! Grrr. They announced they couldn't get done on Friday and will be back on Tuesday to finish (Monday is Columbus Day).

They hinted to the admin. that they have 4 concerns so far. The way the double dip with tags it is hard to say how much that will eventually add up to.

I will let you all know Tuesday - still holding my breath.
