Not a lot of opportunities for LPN's?

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

I planning on going to school to be an LPN once I pass the entrance exam (I'm going to study my butt off). Anyway, I live in PA & the only places I see hiring here are nursing homes. The hospitals & doctor offices around here only seem to hire Medical Assistants & RN's. This kind of discourages me because I really don't want to work in a nursing home, I'd love to work with children. Anyone else in a similar situation & have any advice?

Depending on where you live, LPNs may not be hired in a hospital setting. This is true where I live in Seattle. LPNs are mostly used for Long Term, Corrections, or Doctors Offices (lower pay in a Dr office though). If your ultimate goal is to work in a hospital with children, then it will be very wise of you to eventually obtain your RN. However, starting with your LPN can be a good way to get your foot in the door of nursing. Yes, you may have to gain experience working in a Nursing Home, but you will eventually be able to move on to an area of nursing that better pleases you.

...OR you can skip getting your LPN and go straight for RN. I know this isn't always an option though.

I'm kind of in the same boat. Right now i work as a CNA in a nursing home and i work with alot of nurses that said they wish that they were in a different setting.

I want to work in a doctors office but i do see alot of Medical Assistance getting those jobs.

I am doing clinicals at a LTC facility..and the nurses here say they LOVE their jobs and would not want to be anywhere else. I think it just depends on you!

In my nursing program, there are LPNs who are working at methadone clinics, hospice, long term care facilities, assisted living facilities, home health, and as school nurses. There is a couple of hospitals here that hire LPNs, but mainly for their sub-acute units.

I am in Michigan and the opportunites for an LPN really are limited. You are correct about the Dr office they hire medical assistants now and the Hospitals are not hiring LPN anymore. Some hospitals here are now moving toward hiring only BSN nurses and want their ADN nurses to apply to a BSN program if they are hired.

I just finished my clinical at a LTC and it really wasnt that bad. I was only doing CNA care because it was our first clinical but I loved working with the elderly. I think a lot depends on the quality of the facility.

My local hospital ( a regional hospital with an ER and all) still hires LPNs. Of course, this is in central Mississippi. I know that probably doesn't help you; just letting you know that a hospital somewhere still hires LPNs.

i want to an lpn like .i work in ny as a dsp for a non profit org ahrc [i know they are states wide] for the challenged children teens adults.. i know they hire lpns...working with these individuals is rewarding...look into if there in your state..they are an beautiful org..name is ahrcnewyorkcity...can t hurt.. good luckx
