My school is a joke

I'm feeling really discouraged. One teacher only teachers once a week on wed for her test that follow Monday through power points that are word for word from the book. The other overloads us with info and when we get to the test its like I'm reading a foreign language because they are completely different than what's covered in class. Then to top it off our lab time is a joke either we sit around doing nothing at all or we have to wait thirty minutes in line to use one practice dummy ! I'm already worried about not passing on to the next semester but even if I pass I'm worried about being an affective nurse. Clinical are coming soon and I feel like I haven't learned much or had the opportunity to fully practice anything !

I disagree. OP, it's not a given that you're going to have a bad experience and get bad teaching in nursing school. Too many people put up with bad programs and that enables them to continue operating. If they couldn't get students, they would have to make changes (or shut down). If you feel like you're not getting a good education, I would encourage you to consider cutting your losses and finding another school. There are plenty of good programs "out there." If you're not getting a decent education, you're just throwing the money away. Best wishes!

I went to one of the top schools in my state. But instructors don't have time to teach you every little thing that may possible be on a test. All I meant by my comment was that a lot of hard work and effort will have to be put forth in nursing school.

Okay, that I agree with. :)

...sounds about right, lol! What you get out of your nursing program is what you put into it. Have you considered that the reason exams never match up to the book is because you can't really teach critical thinking? It's a skill that needs to be honed in on. My nursing school is supposedly the best in my city - and I still feel the way you do, sometimes.

I have exams, quizzes, assignments every week. Sometimes the teacher can't cover everything. Yet, most of us are still there. I'm not trying to be mean, just be sure to really look over your situation before throwing up your hands. Best wishes! :geek:

I'm in a self-paced program, which means that I have a certain amount of homework & tests I have to do every month and a certain amount of time i have to spend in class. I can go any day I want, for as many hours as I want (between 8a-4p). However, the down side of that is there is no lecture, no instructor teaching you things (other than labs). Our pass rate for the last several years is 100%. If we do need help with something, our instructors are always there to answer questions or help you find what you're looking for.

My point of this is, you will get out of it what You put in. Regardless of what your instructors are teaching you, everything you will need to know is in your books. If it's not, you can find it online--from reputable sources. WebMD, National Institute of Health, etc.

As for labs, nothing is as good as hands on, but if you feel like you aren't learning what you need from them and need to review, there are a TON of videos on YouTube. Heck, sometimes I'll watch them and learn a new trick or technique that my instructors haven't seen before. Also, if you're having to wait your turn to use dummies, get up front and watch what everyone else is doing. They are going to make mistakes and have to be corrected so listen to what the instructor is teaching them because you'll learn something while you wait.

I would hate to see you not complete the program and have to start over somewhere else. Hugs!

Try going through my school and realizing its a self taught unorganized mess.

I was not satisfied with my BSN program, but it did provide the means to be able to take the NCLEX. From your description, though, your program is too inadequate. I would agree with elkpark, in recommending that you find a more suitable program now. Cut your losses here while you have the chance to get into a program where you will learn something. Good luck.
