whats a LPN to do?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

So its pretty sad out there so far for the job search. Hospitals only hire a few LPN'S. Doctors office...well they want at least one year experience. The nursing homes are full. I just put a resume in at a cardio office because it said, "new grads welcome" and my sister who does work in a doctors office told me that all the girls in her office said to stay clear of that place. They said they go through LPN's like crazy because they abuse their LPN's in a verbal way. They said they will call you stupid right to your face..YIKES...I would not think that was legal. Now if they call I don't know what to do?????I have a few more places to try but I had no idea it would be this hard. My age does not help either..I am 18. I am not giving up and of course I hope someone will take a chance on me but it does get frustrating :o

I am concerned because you keep stating that your age is an issue. I am almost certain that age discrimination (young as well as old) is now covered under the civil rights act. You need to research this. If you can't find the info (and it should be easy to find), it would not hurt to make a call to an employment lawyer (you can get a free or low-cost initial consultation) to find out the answer. I could swear that I have read in "how to do your resume" books that you don't put your DOB on your resume nor do you put it on a job application. I'm surprised that employers would still put this on their applications in this day and age when it is so easy for a potential employee to sue them for discrimination. The lady who was talking about the open bar was clandestinely trying to find out your age illegally. She was trying to trip you up. That comment was inappropriate at the time. Your answer could have been, "How nice, too bad I don't drink." Even though you are self conscious about your age, stop giving the information. If asked outright in an interview, tell the interviewer that you believe that question is inappropriate according to the law. Once they ask that question, you have grounds for a lawsuit. So, go ahead and get informed about the law on age discrimination. It will be a long time until you are over 21 and look older and won't have to worry about it for awhile (until you start to look like you're 40!). Good luck. Hope that these interviews you are landing turn into your first job.

It's got to be tough right now. I talked to our DON (i work in a nursing home) just the other day and she said she can't hire any more LPN's for any shift because they're full. Heck, she's overstaffing (which is nice at times) for nurses (RN/LPN) but can't get enough CNA's. The LPN schools around here have flooded the market. If your VA job doesn't work out, try the local prison? They usually have openings and hire LPNs. Keep your chin up, get your foot in the door somewhere and show them how good you are! ;)

do you have any insurance companies near you? Such as Aetna, first health or travelers. I live in Dallas and I know for sure Aetna hires LVN's starting around 45,000

I am curious. What does an LPN do for an insurance company? I have had one interview that went really well but have not been offered the job. They told me that they would give me a few days to think about it and call me next week. I just hope they meant it and I really hear from them. Another worry is they do not know I am 18. I know this because they never asked and I was never asked to fill out an application. They just asked for my SS card and LPN License. The women was really nice and told me about the fun Christmas party they have every year and they have open bar. So I know she thinks I am at least 21. Should I have told them? My next interview is tomorrow at a VA Hospital and I have another on Wed at a Cardio office. I really want the first job though. I hope I hear soon because if I get offered jobs at the other two places I don't want to insult them by saying that I am waiting to hear back from another job. What should I say if I get offered the other jobs? How do I stall for time and not insult them. I don't want to burn my bridges. ADVICE PLEASE!!!!!

Hi Jean,

When I worked at both Prudential Insurance and Aetna I did precertification, claims review and predeterminations reveiw for medical necessity. Usually that is what nurses do-there is a lot of telephonic phone work involved. If you don't like talking on the phone that job will not be for you. Its nice if you have kids because its mon-fri usually 8-5pm

Well there was a message on my machine today that a family practice wants to make me an offer. Its a LARGE family practice with 30 beds. So I am excited but a little bummed cuz the town I grew up in its about 25 minutes away, there family practice is looking for a LPN, I sent in a resume. Its a small practice, I think maybe 4 to 5 beds. I did some of my clinical there and I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I can't wait around hoping I get called for an interview. I faxed my resume out to them today and I am not even sure they will hire me. And its a 25 minute ride where this office is only about 7 minutes away and I will learn a lot at this office. I think I am just really nervous because its so big and busy. It would help to hear about your first jobs and if you were nervous??? Love to hear from all of you.

Hey Jean,

Try contacting them, (or the direct person you sent the resume too, or the nursing manager and find out if they received your resume and was wondering when you could come in for an interview. Nothing wrong with being assertive. Too me it shows strength. Good Luck:balloons:
